Is there any benefit to using a tanning bed occassionally. Do they have any of

the benefits of the sun? I'm wondering about this for people that live in areas

where there is no sun for months in the wintertime.

thanks

Hi Rick,

Obviously this is a commercial site promoting their product with

references to prove it all. I prefer to receive health information

from a more unbiased source.

Yes, I am aware of Budwig and her work and I have a profound

admiration for her, both as a person and as a scientist. I became

familiar with flaxseed in the midst of my convalescence when seeking

my own solutions. Flaxseed is a very good source of the omega-3s and

Budwig's work brings an awareness of the importance of essential

fatty acids and the healing potential within our bodies!

I have a wide variety of books on natural healing at my disposal

and have read quite a few articles regarding essential fatty acids

and their potential healing benefits! Although the article you sent

me goes into great detail to present their viewpoint on essential

fats, I cannot bring myself to agree with them, not just because I

have read so much to the contrary, but because my experience leads

me to believe that it is the " balance " of essential fatty acids

that we need to regain and maintain our good health!

According to the article there are four essential fatty acids, n-

3s,n-6s, n-7s, and n-9s. With that I would agree. It is the ensuing

remarks that I disagree with. They contend that omega-9s can be made

by the body and that omega-6s are more important than omega-3s and

the body requires omega-6s much more than they require omega-3s and

that omega-6s should be more abundant in the diet than omega-3s.

I have read enough of Budwig's work to realize that this is not her

opinion! She emphasizes omega-3s over omega-6s and this is obvious

from first glance at her diet!

She recommends eliminating the majority of all animal protein in

favor more healthy plant proteins. She advocates avoiding all

processed refined foods as well, safflower, corn oils, soybean oils,

etc that tend to offset the good effects of essential fatty acids.

If too much of the omega-6

are included in the diet, there is a resulting imbalance which leads

to more sickness and inflammation!

They recommend n-6s in a ratio of 4:1 over n-3s.

I have read enough to know that this is simply not the best way for

those of us who are struggling to overcome a lifetime of improper

eating habits. Omega 6s in refined oils tend to destroy all of our

existing fatty acids and in that way contribute to ill health! We

should avoid them as much as possible.

The author contends that it is not necessary to take in omega-9s,

that they are made within our bodies. If this is correct, my

question would be, why do so many people suffer from high

cholesterol? I am aware that most of us simply do not have the time

to spend hours on end sunbathing. Although I believe that our bodies

do require more vitamin D-hormone) from the sun, Jean Carper and

quite a few other

authors bring to our attention that that we can improve our lipid

profile and fatty acid ratio by consuming foods high in omega-9

(oleic acid) of whom extra virgin olive oil reigns supreme!

Rick, I would enjoy seeing more statistics on this. I am acutely

aware of many people whom her protocol did not help! Although her

work helped to usher in a new awareness of the essential fatty

acids, I believe that her diet is just one small factor in

overcoming major illnesses.

There is a tendency among the alternative health community to just

to take a few key ingredients out of her diet and expect to receive

the same results.

when it is taken completely out of perspective of the original plan

Ms Budwig intended to convey for healing. Of course, the original

diet is the most healing, but you seldom hear the entire protocol

mentioned. I myself, when I initially read her diet in its entirety

was surprised to see the great detail she employs to protect her

patients from the ravages of processed refined foods. This is the

only way her protocol becomes effective and very few realize the

benefits of such a restrictive protocol. they are simply not willing

to make the necessary changes she employs.

After all, there is so much rhetoric, both verbal and otherwise

regarding the efficacy of these `cures'. I much prefer to see those

which have suffered a life of debilitating illness, experience a

chance to live up to their full potential. I don't see this

happening with just one supplement or diet, although pages and pages

of `proof' exist. We are all unique! To employ a single protocol for

everyone would just descend to the level of allopathic medicine.

One-Size-Fits-All.

Best Regards, JoAnn
