Guest guest
Study says 94 percent want labeling A new study by Rutgers’ Food Policy Institute in New Jersey has found that 94 percent of Americans want genetically engineered foods to be labeled. Unfortunately, it seems clear that the biotech industry is benefiting from the fact that not many Americans are aware that foods are being genetically engineered. According to last month’s study, only 26 percent of Americans believe that they have ever eaten genetically engineered foods. Nearly 80 percent of processed foods in the United States contain ingredients that have been genetically engineered. Only half of the respondents (52%) were aware that genetically modified food products are currently for sale in supermarkets. Forty-three percent had heard or read “not much” or “nothing at all” about genetic engineering or biotechnology, while 45% had heard or read “some.” Only 12% had heard or read a “great deal” about it.
