Traditionally these extremely hazardous health effects have been shrugged off as occurring commonly together with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) / Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) / Crohn's Disease / Colitis, and called 'Idiopathic' (an erudite-sounding term for 'unknown'). Perhaps for this reason, labels have generally failed to warn strongly against these side effects. Repeated epidemiological examination does ultimately support the conclusion that these severe adverse events are caused by this class of drugs. In our experience, this class of drugs produces significant adverse reactions, with cautions inadequate or absent. Ransford RA, Langman MJ. Sulphasalazine and Mesalazine: Serious Adverse Reactions re-evaluated on the basis of suspected Adverse Reaction reports to the Committee on Safety of Medicines. Gut 2002 Oct;51(4):536-9.
