Guest guest
http://www.redflagsweekly.com/extra/2003_nov17.html November 17, 2003 THE SCIENTIST’S JUNK SCIENCE ON VACCINES The journal’s editor, Richard Gallagher, undermines scientific discussion by writing a silly, belching editorial that might as well be an ad for the vaccine industry. By RFD Editor, Nicholas Regush I feel sorry for Richard Gallagher. Here is an editor of a mainstream science journal & shy; The Scientist & shy; who actually wasted good editorial space, taking a few cheap shots at those who are concerned about vaccine safety. My, what a courageous editorial decision that was. Gallagher seems to have joined up with those rather overzealous windbags who think science is something that the vaccine manufacturers and their various medical sycophants claim as their very own playground. Ah, but Gallagher just might have had a bad hair day. A pity, I’m sure. Or perhaps he wrote his editorial against those evil “anti-vaccination” people at a vulnerable moment. He seems to have some difficulty distinguishing between “anti-vaccine” and concerns about vaccine safety. But that’s par for the course in the wonderful world of science. It’s always nice to have a buzz word that conceals more than it reveals. This is especially true when multi-tasking or having senior moments. Yes, it’s true that some people are very much against vaccines. Period. But that does not represent the sum total of concern right now about vaccines. Maybe, just maybe, Gallagher has taken a speed reading course and somehow missed this fact. Normally, I would imagine (and I’m being very hopeful here), Gallagher would prefer to take the opportunity to vent his displeasure at the reckless or absent research that runs through so much of so-called vaccine science. As an editor of a serious science journal he will no doubt eventually spend some resources to investigate the numerous safety issues associated with vaccines. I noted with some mild amusement that Gallagher doesn’t think too highly of journalists either.Given that they “churn out badly researched and poorly argued scare stories about the dangers of vaccination.” Good on him. He may have a point there, but he should follow where his finger points rather than become preoccupied in sucking at it. On any given day, the many hacks of modern journalism churn out an abundance of ads on behalf of the vaccine industry. I suspect Gallagher may forget that he reads many of these stories and perhaps has not considered the possibility that he writes about vaccines in a similar vein. Yes, Richard Gallagher, there are some kooks out there, but frankly, among them are many scientists and some science editors who have lost the ability to understand what real science is. Partly, that is because so many of the troops of modern science are accustomed to wearing fancy knee pads at the doorsteps of drug companies. Personally, I’d love to see Richard Gallagher defend his views on vaccines and vaccine critics publicly. If you care, you can read Gallagher’s editorial (Link) HERE.
