The neuro-repair group in the School of Medicine at the University of Tasmania has identified a type protein in the brain with the ability to influence brain healing. Their findings have just been published in the respected Journal of Neuroscsience to great acclaim from international medical researchers. Junior research fellow Roger Chung says while tests are continuing on animals, there could be widespread implications. " We've been looking purely at physical injury at the moment and that's where we're seeing the greatest benefit, " he said. " But obviously a lot of diseases and a lot of injuries - they all involve a common link and that's injury to the brain cells, injury to your neurons, so we think it will be applicable to all sorts of injuries and diseases. " It will probably be better for some diseases than others, but that's something we're going to look at in the future. " It is new in the sense that because this protein is normally found in the brain, we're hoping we can turn it on after an injury and help your brain recover. " Now that's very exciting becuase it might mean you won't have to use drugs or chemicals or even transplants - what it will be is your own brain helping itself to recover.
