Dear List,

I was reading with interest about the product E M Power which is meant to

help with bipolar and other mental disorders. However, can I just ask people

whether they feel a little skeptical after reading the list of ingredients

below? With the exception of B9, Vitamin H, and whatever the proprietary

blend

is, they minerals are just not much to get excited about. Any comments?

Dear Marti,

Speaking of impressed, I wasn't to impressed with your critique of

E.M. Power either.

I am not familiar with the making of this product but have hearrd

very good things about it.

I have to guess what you are not impressed about. I assume that you

mean the size of the individual ingredients are in your opinion too

small to be a big deal.

There is more to vitamins than just size of dose. All vitamin pills

are not equal.

The more balanced to each other they are, the more effective they are

to work synergistically. So size of dose to each other in formula can

be important for some ingredients.

The quality of the ingredients are also very important. Raw

ingredients to make a vitamin pill can be costly or cheap depending

on the quality of the ingredients. It can make a big difference in

effectiveness. Better ingredients can be more effective in a smaller

dose than some larger cheap ones sometimes.

Here are a few other things that make vitamins differ from each other

because of choice in quality of ingredients.

Nutrients do no good if you don't absorb them. Some forms of

nutrients are more easily absorbed than others.

which forms of vitamins used will determine bioavailability. It is

the amount of a nutrient ingested that is absorbed and thus available

to the body for metabolic use. No matter how high the nutrient levels

are of food or supplements, if they are not biologically available

and/or your digestion is insufficient then much of the nutrition you

take-in will not be utilized.

Some manufacturers try and use natural forms when possible and others

use synthetic forms. Others try and use actual foods such as some

pwdered formulas.

So, just comparing labels to size of each ingredient is only one

measure of comparison even if it is the only stanfardized one it can

still be misleading to which brand is better for you.

I personally take a powdered brand that isn't that impressive on the

label either but it is the one that works best for me and I suspect

that it is because that probably the ingredients are better and put

together more correctly in the proper ratios etc.

regards,

Frank

Hi Marti,

The vitamins that I take are called Allone and it is is a powdered

form that I add to milk, juice, or foods. Quite a few of the

nutrients are in a " food " form for easy absorption. I then take quite

a few other things that I feel that I need but it does not provide.

Trying to find a way to supplement my vitamin/nutrient needs is a

continuing process of self education. I have never found a mutiple

that has everything that I would consider important.

The difference between a poor multiple and a good one can be like

night and day though and the person can usually feel the difference

in/with their body. That is unless the person is very sick or damaged

and then it may be difficult.

Another thing is that some multiple vitamins will work for one and

not another is because we are all biologically unique. I may require

10 times more of a certain nutrient than you do or vice versa and if

the multi that I take has that particular nutrient in suffecient

quantities, then I may love that brand while you may find it less

desirable as it may be low in something that you have a higher

requirement for.

In most cases there is no brand of vitamins that will give all the

nutrients that that particular person needs. Most everyone will have

to supplement their multi with additional supplements to their own

individual needs.

The only solution is through education of the person on each

individual vitamins and education on the biochemical process of what

goes on in the body and a trial and error method of ascertaining what

each person's needs are. It is a learning process just as much as

anything to attain health with nutrients.

If anyone wants to learn about these areas, I suggest that you read,

Biochemical Individuality, by Roger J. Williams Phd. and...

The Wonderful World Within You, by Roger J. Williams Phd.

The author is one of the noted scientists and authorities on

nutrients and biochemical uniqueness.
