Guest guest
LOW FAT DIET BAD FOR BONES One hundred forty-two women, ages 42 to 54, who were pre or peri menopausal, were evaluated for their ability to absorb calcium. Those on a low-fat, high-fiber diet were found to absorb 20% less calcium than did the others. Researchers also found that women who have a higher body mass index and higher levels of vitamin D were better able to absorb calcium. This research was done jointly by the University of Pittsburgh, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and Creighton University, Omaha. - from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2000;72:466--71, Comment: There are a number of factors important in absorption and utilization of calcium besides vitamin D: magnesium, manganese, copper, folic acid, silica, vitamin K, zinc, and vitamin A. The right kind of exercise is important, and now we see that the right kind of diet is significant, too.
