Animal Health

Canine autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) is a disease characterized by

increased destruction of red blood cells (erythrocytes) by the dog's own immune

system. Though much attention has been given recently to AIHA due to evidence

linking the process of vaccinating with the manifestation of this sometimes

life-threatening disease, immunization is only one potential cause for this

condition. Another potential cause is the heartworm medication, Proheart6.

Manufacturer's Letter to Veterinarians Warns of Side Effects A letter was sent

to veterinarians by Fort Dodge, the manufacturer of ProHeart 6. Amongst other

issues, you will see just some of the known side effects of the medication.

Report An Adverse Drug Experience Veterinarians and animal owners are encouraged

to report adverse experiences and product failures to the government Agency that

regulates the product in question.

Irradiated Ground Beef to Go to School Lunch Programs Despite objections from

several consumer groups and thousands of parents, teachers and children, the

Department of Agriculture approved the use of irradiated ground beef in the

national school lunch program. Irradiating food causes the creation of known

toxins and unique chemicals. Research has shown numerous health problems in lab

animals that ate irradiated food, including reproductive problems, genetic

damage and cancer development.

Los Angeles Unified School District to ban the use of irradiated food from its

campus cafeterias September 10, 2003 - The Los Angeles Unified School District

banned the use of irradiated food from its campus cafeterias, even though the

U.S. Department of Agriculture last year decided to allow irradiated meat to be

served to millions of children enrolled in federally subsidized lunch programs.

Irradiation exposes meat, fish, fruits and vegetables to low doses of electrons

or gamma rays to destroy deadly microorganisms such as E. coli and salmonella.

But some consumer groups warn that not been enough research has been done on

whether irradiation destroys essential vitamins, possibly endangering health.

" The consequences of using our children as guinea pigs, in the second-largest

school district in the country, is very frightening to me, " said Board of

Education member Julie Korenstein, who sponsored the motion. " I believe we need

to err on the side of caution. " Last year, the

Department of Agriculture announced that districts can buy irradiated meat for

about 27 million schoolchildren receiving free or reduced-price meals beginning

in 2004. Jacqueline Domac, a teacher at Venice High School who campaigned

successfully to ban soda sales on campuses starting next year, said the district

is moving toward creating a healthy environment.

A Miracle In Wisconson The school used to be out of control. Kids packed

weapons. Discipline problems swamped the principal’s office. But not since 1997.
