Guest guest
Subj: Protecting your assets Health e-Tips October 16, 2003 ************************************************************** Dear reader, I wrote to you the other day about my friend Melody who has thinning hair, possibly the result of an iron deficiency. Dr. Wright assures me that iron is a key element in human nutrition, and iron deficiency can cause problems ranging from fatigue and difficulty concentrating to impaired immunity. Though iron-rich foods and possibly iron supplements may help alleviate deficiency, there may be an even easier way to keep some of the iron you already have. You may be sapping your own body of iron without even knowing it just by drinking coffee. Studies have shown that drinking coffee with a meal reduces iron absorption by 39 percent. Drinking coffee after meals also inhibits iron absorption. But you don't necessarily have to give up coffee altogether (though, in many cases, eliminating caffeine from your diet can help your overall health): drinking it one hour before the meal doesn't seem to affect iron absorption. ************************************************************** To start receiving your own copy of the Health e-Tips, visit: http://www.wrightnewsletter.com/etips/freecopy.html Or forward this e-mail to a friend so they can sign-up to receive their own copy of the Health e-Tips. ************************************************************** Restore faulty taste buds Q: I can't taste flavors at all any more. Eating has become more of a chore than a pleasure. Please tell me if there's something that could restore my taste buds. JVW: Without knowing more about your personal medical history, it's hard to say for sure what might be causing your problems. I suggest you make an appointment with a doctor skilled in nutritional medicine who can make sure there's not a more serious underlying cause. For a list of such doctors in your area, contact the American College for Advancement in Medicine (949-583-7666; www.acam.org). In the meantime, you might want to try supplementing with zinc. Taste bud function is actually dependent on zinc, so your sense of taste could be diminished or lost altogether if you're zinc-deficient. Try taking 30 milligrams of zinc (as zinc picolinate) twice daily for 90 days. To balance out the zinc, also take 2 to 3 milligrams of copper daily. If it hasn't worked at the end of three months, zinc probably isn't the answer. ************************************************************** One last thing... If you're a coffee drinker (I am, and I know many of you are too), you might want to plan ahead and enjoy your cuppa joe before your meals. Same goes for tea: the effect of tea on iron absorption is even more pronounced - a 64 percent reduction.
