GSK antidepressant gets FDA nod for social phobia

Fri October 17, 2003 01:13 PM ET

NEW YORK, Oct 17 (Reuters) - GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK.L: Quote, Profile,

Research) on Friday said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved its

antidepressant Paxil CR for treatment of the condition known as social anxiety

disorder.

Paxil CR had previously been approved by the FDA for treatment of depression,

panic disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or intense emotional

symptoms prior to a menstrual period.

People with social anxiety disorder tend to avoid social situations or endure

then under such distress that they can become physically ill, according to the

Merck Manual of Medical Information.

Situations that can trigger the social phobia that in an earlier era might have

been deemed severe shyness include public speaking, performing in public, eating

in front of others or using public bathrooms.

Some 10 million Americans are affected by the condition, according to the

American Psychiatric Association.

Paxil CR is the controlled release version of the British drugmaker's

top-selling antidepressant Paxil, which is facing eroding sales in the United

States due to competition from cheaper generic copycats. The newly patented

Paxil CR is not yet affected by generics.

Glaxo reported worldwide Paxil sales for the quarter ended June 30 of $842

million, with $547 million of that in the United States.

GSK shares were up 20 cents to $43.50 in afternoon trade on the New York Stock

Exchange.
