GOUT: " Rich Man's Disease "

I researched gout in the following two books: " Prescription for

Nutritional Healing, " by James F. Balch, MD and Phyllis A. Balch, CNC;

and " Natural Alternatives to Over-the-Counter and Prescription Drugs, "

by Michael T. Murray, ND.   On page 185 of his book, Dr. Murray

states the following: " It is a well-accepted fact that most cases of

gout can be treated effectively with diet alone. However, with the

advent of potent drugs like allopurinol, many physicians do not even

stress the value of diet therapy to their patients. " The dietary basics

outlined by both reference books include:

No alcohol;

Avoid all fried foods;

Follow a low-purine diet (this has been standard gout therapy for many

years)--foods high in purine that should be entirely avoided include:

anchovies, organ meats and red meats (also meat gravies and broths),

shellfish, herring, mackerel, sardines;

Weight reduction--getting rid of excess weight is considered very

important;

Avoid refined carbohydrates, particularly sugar and white-flour

products, as much as possible;

Low protein diet;

Drink plenty of fluids (non-alcoholic).

Supplements that help gout:

Flavanoids. Quercetin, in particular. Available in certain fruits, also

supplemental form at health food store;

Folic acid. Has been shown in studies to help with gout, but exact

amounts not determined. Recommended daily dosage is 10-40 mg. (This is

considered a " pharmacological dose " ; supplements of folic acid come in

micrograms.) Important

Note: Have a health care practitioner help you with this; This is only

Information and not to treat or cure.

Vitamin B complex, with extra pantothenic acid;

Vitamin C with bioflavanoids -- 3,000 to 5,000 mgs total daily, in

divided doses

Note: The above is a good start but I would also include Black Cherry

Juice as well, and drink plenty of distilled water. Bless MM.
