Anyone have any suggestions on a natural remedy that will let me sleep all the way through the night? Myra

Barbanne Hello Barbanne, Valerian is an excellent herb to take for sleeplessness. If the insomnia is caused by stress and an overactive mind try a tincture containing skullcap, passionflower, vervain, chamomile and valerian and this works beautifully...it is also good for de-stressing during the day. Have you tried chamomile tea half an hour before bed? Walking on grass barefoot and having a warm (not hot) bath or shower? Often we are kept awake by the positive ions clinging to us and making us jumpy. If you aren't asleep within a short time after settling yourself down you need to get up, do some job or other and go back to bed again. Keep doing this until your brain gets the message that you go to bed to sleep...not to thrash around! Another quite radical but successful trick is to stay up all night! Stay up all the following day! Go to bed and s l e e p... zzzzz. See how it works for you :-)) You may have to repeat it a few times until the non-sleep pattern is broken. Guest guest
Dear Barbanne, I take Valerian now and then and have found it helped. However, it is only recommended for occasional use. I imagine that you have tried cutting out caffeine and sugar from your diet. Hope you get some relief. Regards, Anna
Guest guest
Melatonin works fine for me. I have been using it for nearly a decade now. The sublingual form works far better than the stuff you just swallow. Melatonin works best *at* bedtime when the lights go out. If taken while still putzing around the house, my body will fight the melatonin. Back when I used to do caffeine, I found that I had to stop caffeine about 6 hours before bedtime else the melatonin would not work. Melatonin works best for me if I don't eat an hour or two before bedtime. 2 mg is a good dose for me usually. I weigh about 220 lbs. Scale dose up or down depending on body weight. No more than 3 mg is usual. Stress, worry, domestic squabbles all work against a good night's sleep. So does physical pain. I find a brief workout before bed will loosen tight muscles & let me relax better. Guest guest
Hi Barbanne, I've tried both with no effect but my sleep problems very severe for long time. However, I know that others have found them helpful. There are many helpful, non-medicine things for sleep but rather than go into them here, go to 'sleepnet.com'. They are largest group of sleep-seeking people I've found and give each other tips that may help you. barb from ohio --- Barbara <bstahly wrote: > Hi, has anyone here taken melatonin or > valerian? > Really having a problem sleeping and don't want > to take prescribed > meds. Guest guest
Hi Barbanne, I had many sleep problems but found that taking valerian about 30 minutes before sleep helped if I got into bed and then relaxed for 30 minutes or so. My husband was always having to turn off the music and light because I had fallen asleep within that time. The idea is that you should go to bed pretty much the same time every night, get up the same time every morning no matter what. Also to unwind when you get into bed. The best bet is to have soft, relaxing music playing quietly and to just relax and enjoy that - also taking Melissa could be better for you than valerian, you have to find the one that is right for you.
