Bathing Rituals in the Land of Milk and Honey

Milk and honey are time-honoured ingredients that have been used for centuries, either as main ingredients or as formula additions. Milk is noted for its soothing qualities (ancient peoples used to think it would also make their skin "milky white") and honey for it's skin softening and protective qualities.

Ancient-formula Milk Bath

It is said that Cleopatra used a formula similar to this one to soften her skin. Each ingredient is known for its soothing and smoothing qualities.

1 cup (237 ml) powdered milk

2 tablespoons (30 ml) almond meal

2 tablespoons (30 ml) barley or oat flour

A few drops of your favorite essential oil (optional)

Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl. This mixture can be sprinkled directly into the bath, using 2 tablespoons (30 ml) per bath. An interesting variation is to substitute rolled barley or oat flakes for the flour, then fill empty tea bags with the mixture (remember to seal the tops). Soak in your aromatic milk bath for approximately 20 minutes. When you're finished, wrap yourself in a warm towel and enjoy the cleanliness and softness this bath imparts to your skin. Store at room temperature in pretty tins with lids or old milk bottles. Shelf life is 2 to 3 months
