Guest guest
Healthy Snacking By Chet Day Do you drop more money in the candy machine than the collection plate each week? I hate to say it, but if you're like most Americans, you'd not even aware of how much money you're putting into junk snacks every week of your life. Want to try an interesting experiment? Keep a written log for one week and write down every penny you spend on non-meal foods. If you're like most Americans these days, you'll be stunned at how much money you're wasting on soft drinks, candy bars, and other junk that's sapping your energy and expanding your waistline. If you want to snack, and most people do, try a healthy alternative. If you keep your wits about you, instead of putting your hard-earned money in vending machines, you'll... Snack on organic raisins or cranberries or goji berries Snack on dates with an almond stuffed inside Snack on dried apricot with a walnut half on top Snack on other dried fruits If you're watching your weight, you'll want to minimize the dried fruit and nuts. Instead, include in your bag of healthy snacks some celery and carrot sticks and intermix bites of dried fruit and nuts with bites of veggie sticks. Here are three more healthy snacking tips... Plan snacks as a part of your day's food. This way you won't go overboard and indulge in a lot of calories that'll help pack more more lard around your belly button. Set aside "snack spots" in your refrigerator and cupboard and fill these areas with nutritious ready-to-eat snacks. Avoid all high sugar, fatty, and salty snacks, especially candy and soft drinks. And here are some healthy snack choices... Serve raw vegetables, such as celery, car- rots, cauliflower, broccoli, green pepper, green beans, cucumbers, mushrooms or zucchini with a low fat dip. Fresh fruit in season. Low fat quick breads and muffins, such as pumpkin, zucchini, banana or bran. Non-sugared cereals or snack mixes made with popcorn and whole grain cereal. Low fat yogurt with fresh or frozen fruit. Shakes with low fat milk or yogurt and fruit. Keep in mind that healthy snacking will help you stay more alert during the day. So the next time you find yourself experiencing an energy sink, instead of reaching for a donut and a Pepsi, wrap your mitts around something healthy. In closing, I posted a healthy and delicious Pineapple Bar snack recipe on my blog at http://chetday.com/blog/2006/03/healthy-snacks.htm The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.~ Albert Einstein ~ Check Out My Groups: Everything Natural http://health./ Everything Magick EverythingMagick/ -- Version: 7.1.385 / Virus Database: 268.3.4/299 - Release 3/31/2006
