Cookies

5-2/3 cups flour

4 scant teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon ground cloves

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1 teaspoon ginger

1/2 teaspoon allspice

3 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon

2 cups sugar

4 eggs

1 teaspoon almond extract

6 tablespoons milk

13 tablespoons butter or margarine

1 1/2 cups finely ground almonds

1 cup candied lemon peel (finely chopped)

1 tablespoon flour

Glaze

1-1/3 cups powdered sugar

3 tablespoons milk

1 tablespoon melted butter or margarine

Cookies

Pour the one tablespoon flour over the candied lemon peel. Mix well and set aside. Mix together flour, baking powder, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, cinnamon and place on countertop. Sprinkle sugar and almonds over it. Make a well and drop in eggs, almond extract, and milk. Knead into a smooth dough. Roll out to 1/4" thickness and cut with a round cookie cutter. Place on a greased cookie sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 12-14 minutes.

Glaze

Mix powdered sugar with milk and melted butter or margarine until it forms a glaze. Brush over cookies while they are hot. Cookies should be chewy not hard.

Makes 80-90 cookies
