Guest guest Posted December 4, 2005 Report Share Posted December 4, 2005 RED CHRISTMAS GLÖGG Glögg (or glögi in Finnish) is a Scandinavian drink made of red orwhite wine or fruit juice which is heated up along with sugar andspices: cinnamon, cloves, orange peel, allspice, mace, nutmeg etc -a bit like mulled wine - and served hot mixed with raisins andalmonds. At Christmas time ready-made, nonalcoholic glögg is sold inevery store and alcoholic glögg in liquor stores here in Finland. 375 ml (½ bottle) red wine375 ml good blackcurrant juice or red grape juice (or both mixed)1 stick of cinnamon3 - 5 cloves3 - 5 allspice berriessmall piece of dried Seville orange peel100 ml sugar, or to tasteraisinsalmonds(vodka) Scald almonds and peel them. If you can't find dried Seville orangepeel, substitute with a couple of thin strips of the zest of a freshregular orange. Pour wine or juice in a saucepan and heat it up. Don't let it boil.Add some sugar and the spices, mix thoroughly and let stand on a lowheat for 5 - 10 minutes without boiling. Strain glögg and spike it upwith a dash of vodka, if you like. Drop a few blanched almonds and raisins in serving mugs or tea-glasseswith a spoon in them and pour hot glögg over. Serve immediately witheg star-shaped Christmas pastries or gingerbread cookies.
