Peru-Balsam Oil

Peru-balsam, or Myoxylon pereirae - a lofty tree native to Central

America and now grown in India - is a member of the family Fabaceae. The

raw material for making the oil is a thick resin that exudes from

scoring marks made in the tree's bark. Peru-balsam's pleasing fragrance

makes it an appealing ingredient for incense and perfumes, but it also

has medicinal value. In India for example, the oil is a prominent

ingredient in ointments, as it can heal the skin and relieve pain. For

this reason, chapped hands and other minor surface skin conditions may

respond well to a Peru-balsam application. It can also be used to treat

muscle aches, insomnia and bladder inflammations. The antiseptic

cinnamic acid in the oil helps ease coughing associated with ailments of

the respiratory tract, as well. Finally, the vanillalike scent of this

dark brown oil can have a soothing effect in emotional situations.

For Lifting the Spirits

The warn, soft scent of Peru-balsam oil envelopes the soul in a

protective blanket and helps lend consolation and confidence in

difficult times. A blend of the following oils in an aromatherapy lamp

can refresh your spirit.

3 drops Peru-balsam oil

2 drops frankincense oil

1 drop jasmine oil

1 drop ylang-ylang oil

Therapeutic Effect:

Cinnamic and benzoic acids, nerolidol and farnesol give the oil

balancing and stimulating properties. It has antibacterial and

anti-inflammatory actions, which protect the body from infection and

promote the healing of urinary and respiratory-tract ailments. Liniments

made with diluted Peru-balsam oil ease itching and accelerate skin healing

For Care of The Skin:

To keep your skin supple and protect it from damage due to dryness, make

a skin-care oil with 2 ounces of avocado or sweet-almond oil, 5 drop of

Peru-balsam oil, and 2 drops of frankincense oil. After you shower,

massage the oil into the slightly damp skin.

For Urinary-tract Infections:

Daily sitz baths with Peru-balsam oil can help ease discomfort

associated with cystitis, or inflammation of the bladder. Cover up and

keep warm for at lease 30 minutes after you take a sitz bath.

For Sleeplessness:

Because of its soothing and balancing effect, Peru-balsam oil can help

treat insomnia. Add 3 drops of Peru-balsam oil, 2 drops of lavender oil

and 1 drop of ylang-ylang oil to an evening bath. This will help promote

a deep and restful sleep.

For Muscle Aches:

Massaging yourself with diluted Peru-balsam oil can make your muscles

more supple and help relax the tissue. Combine 2 ounces of sweet-almond

oil and 6 drops of Peru-balsam oil, and gently massage the blend into

your skin. If you take a bath or a hot shower beforehand, that will

enhance the effect.

Extra Tip:

A blend of 2 drops of Peru-balsam oil and 1 drop of rosemary oil can

help a headache. Apply to your hands first, and then to your hair. Wash

your hands and brush the oils through your hair.

Take Care:

Like most essential oils, Peru-balsam oil should be used only

externally. Even when applied to the skin, it can be irritating.

Diluting the oil and then applying it to a small test area is

recommended. Because Peru-balsam oil is obtained by a complex procedure

that involves extracting the resin from incisions made in the tree bark,

the quality of the oil varies. For medicinal purposes, it is best to use

only distilled grades that come from a reputable company or pharmacy.

Applications:

Inhaling Peru-balsam oil has an antiseptic effect and can be of use in

alleviating a cough. Add 2 drops of Peru-balsam oil to 1 qt. of hot

water and deeply breathe in the vapors. Do this several times a day

until your cough is completely gone.

The analgesic and anti-itching actions of Peru-balsam il are supportive

in healing vaginal infections. Mix 2 drops of Peru-balsam oil and 1 tsp.

of apple-cider vinegar with 6 oz. of warm water. Shake well and use with

a vaginal douche (available from drugstores), following the instructions

provided. For best results, douche twice a day until the inflammation

goes away.

Compresses with Peru-balsam oil help hard to heal, painful wounds. Blend

1 drop of Peru-balsam oil and 1 oz/ of witch hazel, and then apply to

sterile gauze. Place on the wound and secure with a bandage. Change the

dressing once a day.

For soothing muscles aches, make a blend of 2 tbsp. of a base cream, 4

drops of Peru-balsam oil, 4 drops of rosemary oil and 2 drops of

Roman-chamomile oil. Add the mix to your bathwater, and then bathe for

about 20 minutes.

Diana,

I know this is from awhile back, however I am just now catching up. I

have a series of books with this exact same title you show as the

source but it was in folder-packets formats. It was a buy a few pages

at time to fill up a folder deal. I only had a few more packages to

go to finish the series up but I cancelled due to finances.

Is this the kind of thing you resourced this tidbit from? I don't

have contact information and I would love to finish up my collection,

could you post the contact information for me or is this in a book

format that I can get at Amazon now?

thanks I love the information I get at this group!

Leesy :-)
