Herbal Remedy of the Week: Mullein

Dry cough is common in arid, cold weather. For natural relief, try Verbascum

thapsus, the flowers and leaves of the mullein plant. It not only relieves

dry, bronchial coughs, but also helps with chest congestion and ear

infections. Available in many forms, look for products that are 100 percent pure

mullein. For congestion and dry cough, a dropperful of tincture in a little warm

water every four hours may help, and for ear infections, try a few drops of

mullein oil, slightly warmed and placed directly in the ear. Keep in mind that

mullein seeds are toxic, and while there have been no reported problems with

mullein preparations, pregnant women should use any herbal product with

caution. Do not give mullein to young children for coughs; but for ear

infections you can use a few drops of oil in the ear.
