I've heard that it's used for depression. I have not worked with it myself

but I think if anyone needs help from being depressed then they should go

take a nice relaxing walk. Go to a park or something.

Is that what you were asking about? I've Never seen it used while working

for other herbalists, though I do recall there being OTHER uses for it that

had nothing to do with depression.

Sincerely,

Herbal Remedies - St. John's wort

Can anyone tell me what exactly does this do for you?

Federal Law requires that we warn you of the following:

1. Natural methods can sometimes backfire.

2. If you are pregnant, consult your physician before using any natural

remedy.

3. The Constitution guarantees you the right to be your own physician and to

prescribe for your own health.

We are not medical doctors although MDs are welcome to post here as long as

they behave themselves.

I have used St. John's wort myself and know many other people who

have used it as well. It's for mild to moderate depression, for

instance SAD (seasonal affective disorder), PMS and during

menopause. It's important to purchase a quality standardized extract

which any knowledgable person in a health food store should be able

to point out. Also, do not take St. John's Wort at the same time as

a prescription antidepressant and, it may create sensitivity to the

sun. And, it can be used externally for wounds and burns.

However, if one is clinically depressed, one should see a MD.

Hope this answers your question.

I hope it doesn’t cost me the ban

for this group. But I figured for my own life and I watched others that the

best natural method for depression is

Marijuana

It supports both the mental and physical

aspect of a depression. May its revolute or insane. But I strongly believe that

Marijuana is a door may be not the finest to hear, feel to your body and

spirit. But on the end, fact is, Marijuana is found in the pyramids. It is a very

old plant with amazing characteristics. And it’s illegal for which purpose?

I can’t remember….

Oh Pink, that'd only depress them more. Drugs I guarantee is the answer

they will get. The MD's are becoming legal drug pushers, so gross that it's

out in the open now and we even call them drugs yet no one wonders....

" Street drugs...? Over the counter drugs....? Ah Hah, they're both

DRUGS!!! "

You need drug A to " fix " your depression (meaning so you cannot even feel

the bad feeling anymore, just NUMB) and then later you need DRUG B to get

off of drug A. Oops we just found that drug B is even more addicting than

drug A... we take DRUG B and replace with DRUG C. Oh... this one has hardly

any real visible problems, we'll sell it as the new wonder DRUG. So C get

out and only 5 years later when enough people notice and start keeping a

statistic of deaths and overdoses do the do the familiar oopsies... ehh

hemm... me me meeee... Hello fellow citizens we have come to find that

this DRUG is not the best to use for so and so.... Blah blah blah blah.

All of it BS to hide that they in fact NEW that it was highly addictive,

made mothers eat their daughters arms and dogs attack their owners and

consume them only to be found days later with the corpse.

So the common denominator her is DRUGS KILL. Some would say, well they do

not kill like a gun. But the do, just a very slow one. It's MD's selling

these things to trusting people counting on the MD to tell em like it is.

Not sell em like its Bizz.

Sorry about the rambling, I just cannot stand it when someone says, go to

your MD without adding that they may try and drug you but you can simple

" SAY NO TO DRUGS " .

I don’t

think that’ll get you booted, we’re supposed to talk about natural

methods here. Now I’m sure your not surprised when I say I disagree

with you. But that is only because I believe the only reason people turn

to any form of drug is when they have given up on themselves.

Here is

the real deal behind Mr. Zeb. If you give up on yourself you will start

to rely on other things. I have never given up on myself. One time

I had a screaming headache the likes of which I’ve never had and never

want to exp. ever again. I took half an Excedrin. Never

again. I felt everything but the headache go dull and a tiny bit

muted. What a waste. So I decided that that wasn’t a solution.

So MJ

isn’t a real solution to me, in my opinion just something to hide behind

and get away from reality a bit so you can go on living a but longer without

facing day to day problems. Instead I find a really good book and “Wham”

I’m out of it and enjoying myself ignoring life around me. Then I

finish the book and poof there’s life, right where I left it.

Deana,

It is always a pleasure to help others hon. Keep in there. You

will find that this is a fun game to sort through and when you get done the

freedom gained from this game will be knowing that you can and do eat and

feed the body as it should be fed, that you need not worry about your health

anymore.

Gosh doesn't that sound GOOD!

St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum)

Note: Don't use St. John's Wort if you are taking prescription

medication for depression, anxiety or insomnia...

Cindi

St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum)

St. John's Wort is a perennial herb that is prevalent in the western

part of the US and Canada. It spreads readily and is often considered

an invasive pest or weed. It's bright yellow flowers begin to bloom

around the summer solstice and they continue blooming through July.

St. John's Wort was named centuries ago for Saint John the Baptist

whose birthday was celebrated June 24 when the flowers were in full

bloom. ( " Wort " is a Middle English word meaning " plant. " )

History shows that for 2,400 years it has been used as a safe and

effective herbal medicine. Hippocrates himself, in 350 B.C. prescribed

the herb's extracts for relief from ailments such as tuberculosis,

jaundice, colds, insomnia and hysteria.

Today this highly publicized herb has a reputation as the best natural

anti-depressant around. It has been challenged in clinical studies

against some of the best know pharmaceuticals such as Prozac, Zoloft

and Paxil for mild to moderate forms of depression. The findings have

been undeniable. It works just as well without the serious side

effects pharmicutials often have.

St. John's Wort is not a sedative and it's very discrete. You do not

feel the effects, but you will notice the changes in yourself. Getting

upset easily, emotional ups and downs from stress, menopause, and PMS

are all alleviated with this herb.

Other benefits not often mentioned are it's ability to strengthen the

immune system, giving you more energy, and over prolonged use,

increasing mental clarity. Side effects are few and the benefits are

many. No wonder so many are experimenting with this natural, easy

growing herb.

Scientists still have not discovered why and how this herb works

although it is believed that it increases the availability of

serotonin in synapses. And it also increases the availability of

norepinephrine, which increases energy and alertness and dopamine,

which increases the feeling of well-being.

St. John's Wort contains flavonoids and xanthones that are MAO

inhibitors. MAO inhibitors increase the level of nerve impulse

transmitters in the brain that maintain normal mood and emotional

stability.

The medical research conducted today is focusing mainly on its

anti-depressant abilities, however this herb has many more therapeutic

values worth mentioning.

St. John's Wort has been demonstrated to increase theta waves in the

brain. Theta waves normally occur during sleep and have been

associated with deep meditation, serene pleasure and heightened

creativity.

It has been used to relieve menstrual cramping, arthritis and more. It

soothes the digestive system, being used for ulcers, gastritis,

diarrhea, and nausea.

It's antibiotic properties help heal cuts, wounds, bruises, skin

ulcers and shingles.

St. John's Wort has a large list of healing benefits including:

Promoting restful sleep

improved capillary circulation

cardiac circulation

eases gastrointestianal distress

relieves discomfort associated with PMS

It's emotional benefits include:

relieving tension

anxiety

fatigue

insomnia

seasonal affect disorders

irritability

It enhances sociability, increases alertness, improves mood,

productivity and motivation. Great for use with pre-menopausal women

and alleviating the symptoms of hormonal change and treating decreased

vitality. It seems to take the edge off a bit.

St. John's Wort is currently available over-the-counter in several

forms: Capsules, Tea, Oil and Tinctures.

The capsules include the active ingredient hypercin. Make sure you

check the label for standardized at 300mg; 0.3 hypericin content.

The tea is made from the whole herb. There is no standardization and

all the healing benefits of the plant are intact.

The infused oil is the yellow flowers infused in olive oil. It is red

in color and an excellent antiseptic. Used externally as a massage oil

to ease joint pain, inflammation and sprains, bruises, wounds, and

hemorrhoids.

Tinctures are crushed flowers steeped in alcohol. Used externally to

disinfect wounds and first-degree burns. Also improves capillary

circulation.

St. John's Wort is a very safe herb with few side effects. However, be

aware that it may cause photosensitivity. It is important to avoid

overexposure to direct sunlight from activities such as skiing,

sunbathing or light boxes when using this herb. Also do not take St.

John's Wort if you are already taking a prescribed anti-depressant.

It is important to note: it takes from 2-6 weeks for St. John's Wort

to accumulate in the body and for the effects to take place. Be

patient, many people notice the effects much sooner.

Dried St. John's Wort Usage

Bath - Great for skin problems and healing inflammation and wounds.

Make an infusion and add to bath water.

Tea - Mild in flavor. Use up to 1 teaspoon dried herb per cup of tea.

Easily mixed with other herbs to increase consumption. Drink 3 cups

per day for depression, anxiety and to boost the immune system and

increase mental clarity.

Compress - Make an infusion of the dried herb. Can be used hot or cold

for headaches, wounds and rashes.

Infused Oil Usage

Massage - To ease joint pain, inflammation and sprains. Also for

varicose veins, scalds, arthritis and more.

Skin Healing - Good to use topically for wounds, sunburn, burns, and

post-operative scars.
