Guest guest
I have a son who is 4 years old. He is extremely scrawny. To keep his weight on, he has to eat continuously durring the day. He won't eat more than a few bites of something at a time. Same with drinking things. This creates issues when he is sick. Which he is right now. He did not eat for a day and lost 2-3 pounds in that one day. He has gone two days without eating so far and has lost at least one size in clothing. It usually takes several months for him to gain even half a pound. Huge setbacks. He has seen doctors for this. They insist it is his high metabolism, heart condition and possibly his autism. (surgically repaired VSD and leaky bicuspid aortic valve) I need recipes that will help him gain weight quickly. He is currently about 20 pounds since he got sick with a cold. He is not picky about what he eats as long as it is not red. He doesn't like the color. And he is not allergic to anything. We have tried milk shakes and carnation shakes with no success. So, any fattening recipes would be great. We don't have anything in the house that containes any dyes or preservatives (his twin is severely allergic). So, adding things like Koolaid is not a possibility. I also don't have candy or chocolate.Thank you everyone,AngelaWorried mom
Guest guest
Hi Angela, When my girls were little and I couldn't get them to eat anything, I would make a real simple dish, It's called "Top Ramien" by Nissan and they just loved eating it, they liked playing with the noodles, I would make it a noodle eating game, I would get a noodle and suck it in and it would go in fast and give you a little splash, and my girls thought that it was so funny...Belive it or not they would eat all the noodles. At lease I got them to eat something...And they really enjoyed eating it....I have 3 grown daughters and a 12 year old, and it worked with all of them. it's a fun dish try it. Guest guest
here is some recipes for kids who need to gain weight with CF......not extremely healthy lol but its some great ideas for weight gain CF Recipes A great high calorie/protein recipe: Take two slices of bread of your choice and toast them. Spread margarine on one slice and spread a generous amount of peanut butter on top of that. Slice up about half of a banana and put all the little slices on top of the peanut butter. On the other slice, spread Marshmallow Creme and top with jam or jelly of your choice. Put the two slices together and there you have your sandwich. Delish! (Source: Richard Whicker Sr.) Epulor in a caramel milkshake: 4 scoops Vanilla Ice Cream 1 pkg. Epulor 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract 1/2 cup Whole Milk Joan Devoe's Recipe for her 12 year old daughter Katie, she gained lots of weight with this. Since Carnation Instant Breakfast is so expensive and we go through so much of it I came up with my own recipe for making shakes 4 cups milk 1 cup powdered milk 8 tbsp. Nestles Quik powder 1 can evaporated milk Mix in the blender and refrigerate (I pour it into 4 Snapple containers. They are great when you are on the go and the kids can help themselves.) " Last year at clinic we were told that our daughter Katie (12yowcf) would have to either get a feeding tube or try Megace, drug used to appetite which had not been tested yet on adolescents. She had always been petite but now her weight had dropped off the growth charts. We convinced our doctor at Children's Hospital to give us a few weeks to try something new but we were very discouraged and concerned about having a permanent feeding tube. After reading about all of the problems with feeding tubes in the C-L archives I knew it was not the right answer for us. Anyway, to make a long story shorter, Katie had no appetite whatsoever. I got her to drink four shakes a day by rewarding her with a new outfit for every 5 pounds she gained. (Talk about bribery). At first her stomach hurt a lot after she drank one but I think it was so shrunken from not eating much at a time for so long. At our next clinic visit she had gained 8 pounds!!! Everybody made a big deal about it so it was really great for her. Altogether in the last year she has gained 21 pounds and looks wonderful. " High Calorie Chocolate Pudding 3 1/3 cups half & half 1 large pkg. (5.9 oz.) instant chocolate pudding 1 package vanilla Scandishake 2 packages chocolate Carnation Instant Breakfast 1 tablespoon sugar This will yield (8) 1/2 cup servings. Each serving will have approximately 200 cal. & 11.5 g. fat. This recipe is Angela Ruchotzke's daughter Emily's favorite! Modification to this recipe: (Added Apr. 24, 1999) 3 1/3 c. half and half 1 large package chocolate pudding mix 1 package vanilla Scandishake 2 pkgs. chocolate Carnation Inst. Breakfast mix 2 pkgs. Epulor Makes 8 1/2 cup servings. Each serving has 460 cal. & 19 g. fat Adding the 2 packages of Epulor to the mix makes a huge jump in the cals & fat. If you add the Epulor - just keep stirring. At first, it will seem like it'll never mix in, but it does! And it does not separate after it's been in the fridge! 2 more great recipes from Angela Ruchotzke: BUTTERSCOTCH PUDDING (Added Apr. 24, 1999) 2 c. half and half 1 small package butterscotch pudding mix 1 pkg. Epulor Makes 4 half-cup servings. Each serving has 300 cal. & 17.5 g. fat 7-LAYER BARS (Added Apr. 24, 1999) 1 c. butter (2 sticks) 11 oz. mini M & Ms (1 bag) 16 oz. butterscotch chips (1 1/2 bags) 7 oz. coconut (1/2 bag) 4 cups graham crackers 6 oz. pecan pieces (1 bag) 2 14 oz. cans sweetened condensed milk Melt the butter in a brownie pan (12 x 14), crush graham crackers & sprinkle crumbs evenly over the melted butter. Add in order, M & Ms, butterscotch chips, coconut, pecans. Pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over all. I don't quite empty the cans - I pour until it quits pouring, so there's just a little left in the cans... Bake at 350 for 35 minutes or until golden brown. Cut into 40 bars (you can make the bars smaller if you like & get more...) each bar will have 290 cal. & 16 g. fat. Ben & Jerry's or Hagen Daaz' Full Fat Ice Cream: 1,300 to 1,500 calories a pint! (Added Apr. 13, 1999) High Calorie Milkshake: (Added Apr. 13, 1999) Vanilla Ice Cream Carnation Instant Breakfast or Scandishake Milk Chocolate, Strawberry or Caramel Syrup Mix all together and enjoy! Orange Milkshake: (Added Apr. 13, 1999) Scandishake Orange Sherbet Vanilla Ice Cream Mix all together and enjoy! Oreo Milkshake: (Added Apr. 13, 1999) 8 oz whole milk One packet vanilla Scandishake 1/2 cup high fat Oreo ice cream 5 Double Stuff Oreos Mix in the blender. Served in a frozen beer mug with a straw. Cookies are a nice addition. (Put the milk in the blender first then the cookies so they'll soften up for a minute.) Peanut Butter Milkshake: (Added Apr. 13, 1999) Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies 2 Tbsp of Peanut Butter Vanilla ice cream Milk Scandishake packet. Peach Milkshake: (Added Apr. 13, 1999) Canned Peaches Milk Scandishake Ice Cream Special tips for kids: (Added May 6, 1999) Dip everything. Use Ketchup, mustard, Ranch dressing, BBQ sauce, etc. with everything. It will usually get him to take a couple extra bites. Also, all kids love pretzels - no fat of course, so give them chip dip with them. Put ScandiCal Calorie Booster on a lot of food and act as if it is special salt just for him. A kid will love that idea if he has siblings. Sprinkle ScandiShake powder on ice cream, cereal, cake and muffins and tell him it is special sugar. Make Jiffy muffins in the little miniature cupcake tins and add ScandiShake powder in the mix. They love the little cakes and will eat several at a time. Before bedtime he gets ice cream and a story. Make shaved ice out of Pediasure, or use ScandiShake powder and Jell- O. Try making Banana Bread, Zucchini Bread, etc. spread with lots of butter or cream cheese. Make lots of finger foods. Put peanut butter on everything. Someone did say that French Toast with peanut butter and syrup is very good. Scandishakes with 8 oz. whole milk, and ½ cup ice cream (Added May 8, 1999) " Reinforced " Whole Milk: Mix Carnation Instant Milk Powder into whole milk. It boosts the calories, and may not even be noticeable upon tasting, depending on how much you put in. Leave air space in the jug, and shake it very well, to avoid any lumps. It gets frothy, so let it sit before you serve it. (Added May 8, 1999) Good idea: Make your favorite milkshake, or Scandishake, and freeze it into " popsicle " molds, or " lolly " molds, however you call them in your area. This is especially favored by children. Thanks Fiona for the wonderful idea! (Added Aug. 20, 1999) Wes LeBaron's Milkshake ***1250 calories per serving!*** (Added Nov. 6, 1999) 6oz Half & Half (220 calories) 8oz Heavy Cream (750 calories) 1tbsp MCT Oil (80 calories) 2tbsp Protein Powder (25g, 100 calories) 2tbsp NestleQuick (100 calories) This shake isn't balanced. It's about 60% fat, 30% protein and 10% carbo. A meal that really parks you because there isn't enough easy burning carbohydrates. He has gained 35 pounds (95-130 lbs) in about 3 or 4 months, drinking 4 to 5 16 oz glasses of these shakes daily. A few high-cal recipes from " Cystic Fibrosis on the Trail " (Link updated Sept. 5, 2003) Add heavy cream to oatmeal, cereal, milk, or anything else that you would normally add milk to (Added Mar. 18, 2001) High-calorie recipes for kids with CF from the Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron (Added May 10, 2004) High-Cal Smoothie Mix together in a blender: Yogurt, A Banana, Ice, Juice, and Scandical Powder (Added June 8, 2004) Jim's Shake One envelope of shake powder, 12 oz. milk, one cup of banana pudding, and 2 very heaping scoops of vanilla ice cream. Blend in blender until smooth. Yields about 30 oz. of drink. Has about 1200 calories, 100 grams of fat. You can vary this to your taste by adding different flavors of ice cream or pudding, or by using fresh fruit. I have found that it tastes better by using a good quality ice cream and not a very cheap version. I like the strawberry packet of shake, but if you want to try vanilla, you can make any flavors you want because the flavor of the packet doesn't mask the flavors of the fruit or other ingredients you add into it. My recipe makes a thick shake and is sometimes hard to drink thru a straw! But I have found it tastes good and others really like it too.
