Dear zzz,

 

Husbands or boyfriends murder three women each day in the United

States. And more than 700 women are raped or sexually assaulted every

day. We can stop these tragedies.

 

Join Amnesty International in ensuring that the U.S. government is

carrying out its obligations to prevent violence against women and

punish its perpetrators. This September, the Violence Against Women

Act (VAWA) will be up for reauthorization. Please, ask your legislator

to make sure it is reauthorized and fully funded.

First passed in 1994, VAWA meant that our federal government

finally acknowledged that domestic and sexual violence cause

tremendous harm to our society. It also put real resources into

helping victims. Millions of women and children are better off as a

result of VAWA.

 

VAWA will expire in September 2005 unless we act now.

 

Please contact your members of Congress, urging them to pledge

their support for reauthorizing a strong, expanded Violence Against

Women Act and to push for introduction of a comprehensive bill and

hearings this summer on the tremendous impact VAWA has had.
