Guest guest
*as posted on another site* Newspaper BasketSupplies: 10 single-page sheets of newspaper, glue stick, clothespin for holding basket together until glue dries, strong liquidhouse hold or wood glue, paint and optional metalic paint pen for edgesStart by rolling a sheet of newsprint (working from top of pagedown), around your finger into tight roll. Glue seam shut with gluestick and flatten newpaper log to make a cane for weaving. Set aside and repeat process with the rest of newspaper.Next lay 3 newspaper canes side by side on work surface. Lay 3 morecanes horizontally across the first 3 centering the canes as best asyou can. Carefully weave the canes into a 3 by 3 grid with equal legs on all sides. This makes the bottom of your basket. Now bendthe legs up so that you can start working on the sides. Takeanother newspaper cane and weave it in and out around the basket.Overlap that canes ends by the width of a cane and glue the two ends together using stong glue. Clothes pin the cane until the gluedries. (Several hours) Remove clothes pin and weave 2 more canesaround basket allowing each cane to dry before adding next row.****NOTE**** I have made baskets where I glued 3 canes into circles and allowed them to dry overnight so that when it came time to buildthe sides of the basket, all I had to do was slip the circles downand weave the legs around them. This method works great as long as you are a good judge of how much to overlap each end of cane.Once the sides of the basket have dried and clothes pins have beenremoved, bend each leg of newspaper cane to the inside of the basketand tuck into the weave. Tighten weave and glue each cane end into place. Now take your last cane and slip it into the weave on theoutside of the basket to form a handle. Make sure that ends arehidden and glue well to secure. Allow to dry.Paint as desired. I painted mine using purple paint and a small paint brush to get into all the little areas. Then I took a goldpaint pen and highlighted all of the canes edges. It came outreally nice for a small centerpiece Easter basket. I also madelager baskets using the double sheets of newspaper and rolling the paper sideways instead of up and down. -- Diana Gonzalez Nothing wastes more energy than worrying - the longer a problem is carried, the heavier it gets.
