Healing Pets With Herbs Dr. Aurelia Louise Jones

Plants were the first healing remedies and they are still nature's healing gifts to us humans and to the animals living on this planet. Dogs and cats in the wild knew what they needed and would travel long distances to find the right growing green. Today's confined pets have far less choice and opportunities to take care of their own needs but still seek out to use plants whenever they can. I watch my cats eat various herbs and plants throughout the growing seasons and my pets are very healthy. Plants contain nutrients that cats and dogs need. Animals making a kill in the wild or domestically go first to the semi-digested plant contents in the stomachs of their prey. The same weeds that humans so vigorously pull up and poison from their lawn contain medicinal properties that can save pet and human lives, or make those lives more free of disease and pain.

Some pet owners worry when they see their pet eat fresh plants outside and even make attempt to stop their pet from doing so. Animals are meant to be close to the earth and commune with nature just like we do. Animals do need fresh herbs and plants for their well-being and if they are in situations where they cannot fetch for themselves what they need, their caretakers should provide it for them.

Aloe very juice: used internally is a bowel cleanser and detoxifier. It is the safest pet laxative for constipation, diarrhea, and internal cleansing during illness. It is very helpful in cases of arthritis, allergies, colitis, digestive disorders, hairballs, yeast infections, hot spots, liver and kidney imbalances.

Kelp: a seaweed, is a natural iodine and mineral supplement. The iodine in kelp is necessary for a properly functioning thyroid, good metabolism and for a strong glandular system. It may be the answer for many pets now on synthetic thyroid medication, with anemia, obesity, dry skin, hair loss, bad teeth and digestive problems. Kelp is an anti-bacterial agent, anti-cancer, anti-arthritic and antioxidant. For pets, use kelp in powder for or small granules and add to their foods.

Alfalfa: nourishes the entire system because it is such a good source of minerals. It is good for the pituitary gland, it alkalizes the body rapidly and helps detoxify the liver. Helpful in cases of arthritis and rheumatic pain.

It is a privilege to own a pet. Your pet deserves the best possible nutrition for maximum health. It also needs a warm bed and lots of affection. In future articles, we will talk more about nutrition for your pet.

Remember when you adopt a pet, you are making a life time commitment to this animal. It is a serious decision. Pets are not commodities and they are not disposable. Spay and neuter you pets because there are not enough homes to accommodate all the extra pets that are carelessly bred every year.

“Then I will tell you a great secret, Captain. Perhaps the greatest of all time. The molecules of your body are the same molecules that make up this station and the nebula outside, that burn inside the stars themselves. We are starstuff, we are the universe made manifest, trying to figure itself out. As we have both learned, sometimes the universe requires a change of perspective."
