Guest guest
Container GardeningTo make an eye catching garden in a pot think of more than just one planting. Start with these simple rules and you're bound to be pleased with the results.1. Choose a pot with drainage holes or drill a few of your own. Fill with potting soil and mix in fertilizer. 2. Start with a center plant (focal point) with an upright or arching shape. An umbrella plant is good for this. 3. Add color with a flowering plant such as petunias or pansies. Their compact shape and continual blooming makes them favorites.4. Add trailing plants around the periphery such as ivy, vines, or vinca. These help to soften the edges of the pots.5. Dig the hole, carefully remove the plants and place them in the pot filling with soil and gently pressing down. 6. Water the container thoroughly. 7. Add mulch or decorative stones. Tips: If you're using a very large pot start with a layer of plastic pots to take up space and keep the pot from getting too heavy. If you like the look consider using a wagon filled with a variety of small potted plants. And keep your eye open for unusual containers to use for plants - remember that pedestal sink at the last garage sale? _ "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."-- Mahatma Gandhi
