Herb & Essential Oil of the MonthYlang-YlangBotanical Name: Cananga OdorataFamily: Annonaceae (Cherimoya) a.k.a. The Perfume Tree, Ilang-Ilang,Ylang Ylang, pronounced (ee-lang ee-lang) is a sweet smelling exotic tree that grows in tropical areas of the pacific islands. This unique tree produces flowers that have long trailing petals. At first the flowers are white and like a 5 pointed star. Then they turn green and are not very noticeable. Then finally they begin to change color toward their final color of either pink, mauve or yellow. It is the yellow flowers that have the highest essential oil content and are used in aromatherapy. These delicate flowers are often distilled several times. The first distillation contains the finest oil and is called an absolute. It is too heavy for use on its own. The next distillation produces Ylang Ylang No. 1 and 2. These are the grades used in aromatherapy. The 3rd and 4th grades are considered by-products and are used in soaps and other cosmetic and perfumery items. This final grade is sold under its Latin name of Cananga rather than Ylang ylang.Ylang Ylang is a large tree that can grow from 50-70 ft tall. It blooms early when it is young and continues to bloom almost continually when it matures if conditions are right. It loves naturally warm climates that are moist or humid. Ylang Ylang trees can be kept in a container indoors or in cooler zones. Avoid freezing and frost.Ylang Ylang is often called the Perfume Tree. Except for the alcohol added, Ylang Ylang is Chanel No. 5. It is also now added to many other perfumes, cosmetics and soaps. Especially in men's blends where it adds sweet undertones. Ylang Ylang's scent is euphoric, and it is often compared with the 3 other natural aphrodisiacs, Rose, Jasmine and Neroli. It has the special ability to relax and calm the body and emotions. It lowers blood pressure and rapid breathing rates, it also regulates the adrenaline flow. These calming traits and its antidepressant attributes make it the perfect oil for those who suffer from low self-esteem, PMS symptoms, frigidity and other sexual issues. Ylang Ylang eases frustration and anger as it lifts emotions. It is great to use in times of stress or tension. Even during shock, trauma and times of mourning.Ylang Ylang has many aromatherapy uses, most of them dealing with emotional issues. It is safe and recommended for all skin types including mature and aging skin as well as those suffering from oily skin and acne.
