COLD WEATHER TIPS: PET CARE

Pets need special care during the cold months just like humans. There are a few things we can do to make sure they are healthy and comfortable during the winter.

ANTIFREEZE AND ICE-MELTSBeware of antifreeze! It takes just a tiny amount to poison an animal. We had this happen to our family cat last year. He kept running out the door every time we opened it---but had not done it much in the winter, so we weren't worried. One day he seemed very tired, and by morning he was very sick---my husband drove straight to the vet but it was too late. It was hard on everyone. Our new kitty is an indoor cat, and everyone in the family is serious about keeping her from getting outside. Always clean up your own vehicle's additives in the garage and driveway, and watch the neighbors, if they are close where the pet may wander over. Try to keep your pet indoors or at least on a leash when they do go out in the winter. It's better to be on the safe side then risk the loss of a loved pet.

Road salt is another hazard to pets. It can burn their feet and mouth. Even many of the ice-melts can do the same thing. A good habit to get into is to remove snow and ice from their paws when they come in--and check their fur too. If they lick it off, they can injure their tongue or mouth. Use a warm, damp towel to clean your pets fur and paws.

HOW COLD IS TOO COLD?When the temperature drops below 20 degrees Fahrenheit keep your pet indoors. If your pet is tiny or has short, thin hair they may not even be able to tolerate temperatures in the 30's. Short-haired dogs such as Greyhounds, Boxers or Chihuahuas should go out just long enough to do what they need to. If you notice their skin looks white, or feels extra cold--and they are acting as if it's painful, they may have frostbite. Call your vet right away.

If you do let your pet out to exercise for a longer period of time, make sure they have water outside as well as inside. Use a ceramic or plastic bowl and check to make sure it's not frozen before letting them out. They need a drink when they are out exercising, even in the winter.

One more winter tip---if you have cats that are outside, or notice strays around in the winter, be sure to slap the hood of your vehicle as you get in--before starting it. Some animals will hide in the engine when it's warm or in the tire area.

Nothing wastes more energy than worrying - the longer a problem is carried, the heavier it gets. Don't take things too seriously - live a life of serenity, not a life of regrets.
