Guest guest
Found this at the " What really works " website. HTH, Marvel 14 Sep 2003: Shingles My uncle has shingles and is in excruciating pain. His father (my grandfather) suffers too. Can you please recommend anything to help alleviate their misery? Ms S. Stennett, Colchester This is a viral condition caused by the Varicella zoster virus (VZV) which can trigger chickenpox in children and painful shingles in adults. The theory is that having been infected in childhood, the virus lies dormant in the nerve ganglia until reactivated in later life. The pain of an infection is followed by lesions which may only appear for between three and five days and while the duration of an outbreak is between seven and 10 days, it can take up to a month for the skin to completely recover. In adults over the age of 50, pain can persist for up to six weeks after the outward symptoms have cleared. This is known as postherpetic neuralgia. Since the majority of people have chickenpox in childhood but not everyone suffers from shingles in later life, it makes sense to conclude a healthy immune system can keep the dormant virus suppressed and researchers now link shingles with weakened immunity. The remedy that has performed well in trials to reduce the pain of postherpetic neuralgia in shingles patients is Reishi (Granoderma lucidum); an Asian mushroom that is rich in anti-inflammatory polysaccharides, which has now been shown to have impressive antiviral properties in test tube studies. To clear an infection and prevent recurrence, your relatives should take Reishi mushroom capsules. The market leader in the supply of Asian mushroom supplements is a company called JHS in America. In the UK, you can mail order JHS Reishi capsules from the Nutricentre on 0800-587 2290). To heal the lesions, they can use Kiwiherb's excellent Manuka Paint (also from the Nutricentre) which you simply apply topically to the sores.
