The Pollution Solution

It's near impossible to escape air pollution unless you live far from

city life. Aside from vehicle and industrial emissions, we're exposed

to indoor pollutants at work and at home. All of this can promote the

generation of free radicals - short-lived compounds that can cause

oxidative damage. Air purifiers, certain houseplants and trees help

out considerably by filtering out pollutants such as carbon monoxide

and dust, dander, pollen and mold, but some pollutants slip through

these defenses. Perhaps the simplest way to get additional protection

is to take supplements with generous amounts of these antioxidants:

Vitamin E - Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that protects cell

membranes from damage by free radicals.

Selenium - Selenium activates an antioxidant enzyme called

glutathione peroxidase, which helps the body rid itself of

environmental toxins.

Carotenoids - Beta-carotene, in conjunction with other carotenoids,

acts as an antioxidant and immune system booster. Other members of

the antioxidant carotene family include alpha-carotene, zeaxanthin,

lutein and lycopene.

Coenyzme Q10. Coenzyme Q10 is essential in cellular energy production

and has antioxidant properties that help protect the body from free

radicals.

Vitamin C - Higher doses of this antioxidant, greater than 1,000

mg/day, may provide additional protection against the oxidative

effects of air pollution.

Turmeric/Curcumin - These compounds have demonstrated protective

activity from airborne pollutants, especially cigarette smoke.
