Guest guest
my doctor say's for good source of calcium just buy TUMS I did some research on the internet later and I keep turning up how very important vitamin D and magnesium is to calcium absorption so, it doesn't make alot of sense to me to take magnesium (which requires acid to be absorbed) to help calcium absorption (which also requires acid) if the form of calcium you are taking (TUMS) neutralizes acid.... then how much absorption are you actually going to get on either one?? Guest guest
Maybe this will help you out; Rolaids and Tums contain both Calcium carbonate and Magnesium hydroxide. I'm assuming they added the magnesium to help with the calcium absorption, though both of these ingredients are listed as "Antacid" under the Purpose column of the label. On the side of the bottle it lists these ingredients as Active, and included in the Inactive ingredients is magnesium stearate, which would also help with the absorption of calcium. So, though Tums would kill the stomach acid, if your acid levels are normal, then there's magnesium in the tablets to aid with the absorption of calcium. My doctor told me the same thing as well, and, being pregnant, Rolaids and Tums become another food group to deal with the heartburn . Hope that helps, Morgan - activemom22000 Saturday, July 24, 2004 2:31 AM I have a ? on what kind of calcium to take... my doctor say's for good source of calcium just buy TUMS I did some research on the internet later and I keep turning up how very important vitamin D and magnesium is to calcium absorption so, it doesn't make alot of sense to me to take magnesium (which requires acid to be absorbed) to help calcium absorption (which also requires acid) if the formof calcium you are taking (TUMS) neutralizes acid.... then how much absorption are you actually going to get on either one??Peggy
Guest guest
I can't believe your doctor told you that!!!!arg! For a good source of calcium, you can try broccoli and spinach. Dandelion leaves, raspberry leaf tea, as well as alfalfa sprouts are all very high in vitamins like calcium. , " activemom22000 " <peggysue6@c...> wrote: > my doctor say's for good source of calcium just buy TUMS > I did some research on the internet later and I keep turning up how > very > important vitamin D and magnesium is to calcium absorption so, it > doesn't > make alot of sense to me to take magnesium (which requires acid to be > absorbed) to help calcium absorption (which also requires acid) if > the form > of calcium you are taking (TUMS) neutralizes acid.... then how much > absorption are you actually going to get on either one?? > > Peggy

Guest guest
You know, I think I half figured that out, because whenever I do have heartburn, I always get a huge glass of milk first-- it's like an instinct. And, I usually drink milk before bed, too. Nice to know nature kicks in a bunch with things like that ! Thanks, Morgan - Diana Wednesday, July 28, 2004 9:56 PM Re: I have a ? on what kind of calcium to take... actually, for my heartburn cold milk and ice cream helps.you are pregnant! yay for you!!! , "Morgan" <morgan@l...> wrote:> Maybe this will help you out; Rolaids and Tums contain both Calcium carbonate and Magnesium hydroxide.
