General Warning - do not injest comfrey!

Comfrey Cream

1. Comfrey has soothing, healing properties that make it an

excellent cream for

delicate skin. Shred about 2 oz (60gm) of dried or 4 oz (11.5gm) of

fresh

leaves into a heatproof bowl.

2. Pour 1/3 to 2/3 pint (150-300 ml) boiling water onto the leaves

to produce

the strong infusion required for making toiletries.

3. Leave the herbs to steep for at least 15 minutes, but preferably

2-3 hours

to make a strong infusion. Never use an aluminum container.

4. Pour 1/2 pint (150ml) of good-quality oil - preferably an olive

or almond

oil - into the top of a double boiler. Have ready some beeswax and

cocoa

butter.

5. Break about two tablespoons of beeswax into the top of the double

boiler

containing the oil and allow it melt slowly over the boiling water

below.

6. Now add approximately two tablespoons of cocoa butter to the pan

and allow

it to melt.

7. Strain 1/3 pint (150ml) of the infusion into a pan and warm it

without

boiling. Use stainless steel, ceramic, glass or enamel pans.

8. Add a teaspoon of borax to the warmed infusion and stir until

dissolved.

Keep chemicals away from the eyes and skin.

9. Add 2 teaspoons of good-quality honey to the pan and stir until

well-dissolved. Inferior honey gives a less pleasant result.

10. Remove both pans from the heat and slowly add the

infusion/borax/honey

mixture to the oil/wax one. Stir carefully to blend the contents

together a

little.

11. Beat the infusion into the wax mixture until it goes thick and

creamy -

this will happen as it starts to cool. Use a wooden spoon or

electric whisk.

12. Pot up the cream into suitable jars with screw-top lids. Label

all pots,

bottles and cosmetic jars clearly so that you know what is in them.
