Unfortunately, they are quite unpleasant to the smell. Catnip, lavender, lemon balm, lemon verbena, and sweet woodruff - all of which smell great - have mild sedative powers, so consider adding these to your pillow if you have them in your garden. If you use catnip or valerian in your herbal mixture and share your home with cats, watch out for your pillow: Cats love these herbs! Substitutes: As for other substitutions you might find those below of use. Helitrope - use jasmine flowers, in smaller amount (about half as much) Mimosa - use equal parts Orange blossoms and Jasmine Lilac - use equal parts Linden flowers and Orange blossoms French Marigold - use any other true marigold flower, but don't substitute 'pot marigold' (calendula). These are two different species and substitution would not give you the same results.
