Hi Dan,

I have not had good results w/ combinations of acupuncture, w or w/o

electro stim and herbs in treating addictions. Nor have I seen

published reports that support the efficacy of acupuncture/ herbs as a

stand alone treatment. Many of the people I work w/ want a quick fix,

something that does not require much effort on their part, some ear

seeds, a little acupuncture, some herbs to take and may be 2-3

appointments. People that I have the most success w/ are willing to make

a long term committment to their health. They understand discussions of

nourishing the lung and spleen and relaxing the liver after the

prolonged effects of smoking/drugs and are willing to commit the

neccassary time. I use the 7 Forest herbs for this protocol such as

Ardisa, Lily, Cyprus and Zizyphus @ a 10 gram/day dosage, also Tian Wang

Bu Xin Dan is good. These herbs are just for the cravings, anxiety and

irritability, with additional herbs added for the S/S.

I've found that Jia Wei Xiao Yao Wan is very useful to release the

constrained Liver Qi which is usually seen in people that abuse

cannabis. People who abuse cannbis, the next day, before the

next 'hit', suffer from irritability and mood swings. Smoking causes

Heat hence the use of jia wei instead of the standard xiao yao wan

formula, as the jia wei version is more Yin in nature.

There's a very good article on addiction by Steve Given in the

Journal of , www.jcm.co.uk

I've just finished writing a literature review of the use of

acupuncture to treat lower back pain and found that TCM has been

given a rought ride within the RCT model because of several reasons.

Firstly, TCM does not really fit into the RCT framework, i.e.

syndrome differentiation. Secondly, the studies are usually of poor

methodology and thirdly the people conducting the studies do not

understand TCM and so select an avary of acupoints. Therefore, i'm

not surprised by some of the studies posting a negative result.

For the addiction I would recommend Amethyst the old standby, also Lithium

or Turquoise. To help your friend sleep they could try again Amethyst,

Charoite, Hematite, Howlite, Lapis Lazuli and Sodalite, all these crystals

are easy to get and not very expensive, although Lithium can sometimes be

the exception.

Your friend could use either tumbled stones or perhaps a bracelet . You must

remember to program the stones for your purpose.

You can find some of these stones at my site if you have trouble getting

them. http://www.thecrystalcornerstore.com
