Greetings Kelly,

Does the site that you got that information from say WHY you should not

place it in direct contact with the skin? I am very curious as to what the

issued would potentially be. Melody's listing does not make any statements

about not wearing it against the skin or using an alternate method for making

an elixir with it.

Blessings to your day all.

Hi Kelly,

Where have you read this?? I've never seen or heard anything anywhere which says

that chrysoprase should not be placed directly on the skin. I used to have a

little chrysoprase pendant, and never had a problem with it.

I'm looking in my copy of the Crystal Bible right now, and it says that for

healing chrysoprase should be placed as appropriate or used as an elixir (it

doesn't mention making this by the indirect method, so the stone obviously isn't

toxic).

Hope that helps!

The only stones I would be cautious about placing on the skin would be stones

such as Cinnabar and Lead....to name a few....as most reactions take place at

the cellular level..with contact to the skin....

Hiyas Kelly,

Would you mind saying where you read that Chyrsoprase can not be placed directly

on the skin? Chyrsoprase is member of the chalcedony/agate family and as far as

I know it is not harmful to be placed directly on the skin. I know that certain

minerals like Malachite in their raw form can be harmful if made in to a

tincture of either water or alcohol.

Interesting if it truly is harmful if placed directly to the skin. ::shrugs::

Hi ReNau,

The article said when used for healing purposes do not place directly on the

skin.  But aren't all crystals 'healing' so then should chrsyoprase be directly

on the skin?  or should it be set into metal jewelry?

Not all books say this ... like 'the crystal bible' doesn't reference this , and

nothing weird has happened since i've been wearing it is a pendant...

I am (...by far) not an expert in this field, but I am a self-proclaimed crystal

junkie. So, don't take my answer as 100% fact, but from what I read, I

understand that some crystals are toxic if placed directly on the skin or if

used as an elixir. They contain certain substances which can be dangerous if

absorbed into the skin.

I also understand that certain crystals are safe to be placed directly on skin

only in tumbled form. The raw crystal is the big 'no-no', but again, tumbled is

said to be safe enough. Here is a list of 'toxic crystals' that I found:

There are many minerals that contain either a high heavy metal content or toxic

substance. These minerals should not be used for an elixir and handled with

care.

Please wash hands after handling these stones.

Actinolite

Fibrous form contains asbestos. Not recommended for elixirs. Safe if enclosed

completely in quartz.

Amazonite

Contains traces of copper, which is toxic.

Azurite

Coloring is the result of copper, which is toxic.

Bronchantite

Contains poisonous/toxic copper

Boji Stones

Unknown stone/mineral types - would consider toxic

Chalcopyrite

aka Peacock Ore contains copper and sulfur which can be toxic

Celestite Slightly soluble in water, unfit for elixirs

Cinnabar

Contains mercury which can be poisonous/toxic Wash hands after holding. Do not

touch hands to eyes or mouth while holding. Use in a well ventilated area as

mercury can transform to vapors at body temperature.

Cobaltite

Contains harmful arsenic

Conichalcite

Contains poisonous/toxic copper

Copper Not suitable for elixirs, high levels of copper!?!

Crocoite

Contains poisonous/toxic levels of Lead. Wash hands after holding. Do not touch

hands to eyes or mouth while holding

Chrysocolla

AKA Gem Silica Contains poisonous/toxic copper

Cuprite

Contains poisonous/toxic copper

Dioptase

Contains poisonous/toxic copper

Galena

Contains high amounts of lead which can be poisonous

Halite

Dissolves in water (Its salt, it won't harm you but you won't have a crystal

anymore!)

Hematite

Unfit for elixir use--will rust with prolonged exposure in liquid

Lapis Lazuli

Pyrite inclusions may contain poisonous/toxic Sulfur if they develop a white

powder on the pyrite.

Magnetite

Unfit for elixir use--will rust due to Iron content , not recommended for

elixirs

Malachite

Contains poisonous/toxic copper, take care when handling rough stones. Polished

stones are usually stabalized.

Marcasite

Contains poisonous/toxic Sulfur

Peacock Ore Contains copper and sulfur which can be toxic

Psilomelane

Contains poisonous/toxic Barium

Pyrite

Non-polished or non treated pieces, with time and exposure to oxygen, may form a

white powdery substance/residue which is poisonous/toxic Sulfuric Acid. If this

occurs you should not wear next to the skin or touch.. Not recommended for

Elixirs.

Quantum stone

Contains poisonous/toxic copper, take care when handling rough stones.

Realgar

HIGHLY TOXIC levels of Arsenic. Wash hands after use, keep away from CHILDREN!!

Do not put hands near eyes or mouth before washing hands.

Serpentine

Fibrous forms contain asbestos. Wash hands after use. Not recommended in elixir

preparation.

Sulfur Contains sulfur !?!

Stibnite

Contains lead and antimony. Not recommended for elixirs.

Smithsonite

Contains zinc and may contain copper (green Smithsonite) Poisonous/toxic

Tiger Eye

Fibrous form contains may asbestos (under debate), Not recommended to use raw

forms for elixirs.

Torbernite

Radioactive

Tremolite

Fibrous forms contain asbestos. Not recommended for Elixirs. Wash hands after

use.

Ulexite

Contains toxic Boron

Vanadinite

Contains poisonous Lead

Vesuvianite

AKA Idocrase Fibrous forms contain asbestos. Not recommended for Elixirs. Wash

hands after touching.

Wulfenite

Contains poisonous Lead and Molybdenum

Zircon

A rare form known as Cyrtolite is Radioactive

Aloha and Mahalo. . . great list and very comprehensive.  Can you share the

source as I would like to add info to one of our handouts.

The note about chrysoprase may have come from fact that it seems somewhat porous

and may absorb body oils, but I have never heard warning not to use on skin

before.

I hope you didn't mean that Quartz shoudl not be used directly on skin-that is

definitely a false admonition.  Quartz in raw or unpolished form is often

preferred when needing to charge another crystal (including the human body) and

to release excess energies to create balance.  Using the natural terminations

(energies go toward the point, toward light, toward heat, toward water and

toward the earth) is one of the best uses of these amazing entities and placing

on the skin the most direct use of Quartz.

All of the Quartzes-Clear, Smokey, Rose, Citrine and Amethyst in any form are

safe to use on skin.  As to terminations of other minerals-those should be used

with guidelines for toxicity that you posted.

I wonder if someone was confusing chrysoprase with chrysocolla which

contains copper. It is the copper that makes it toxic in

chrysocolla. Chrysoprase is not toxic. I urge caution and suggest

that you learn about the stones you use. I also suggest that you get

a good book on stones and their physical properties. The metaphysical

books are written for the metaphysical audience. I have found several

authors suggest making elixers and essences with toxic crystals or

stones without the added information about making them via the

indirect method.

There are stones that are toxic if ingested but not by handling. The

stones in their natural state can be irritating to the lungs if you

inhale fine particles, but fine if polished. If a stone is considered

toxic for ingestion i would not take the chance using it tumbled or

not without proper precautions.

Hi Lynn,

It was when i was doing a google search and it was from a website so i don't

remember, but in my own crystal bible it says nothing about it.... and i looked

at all the crystal books at barnes and noble and none warned against it....  so

it was just a random website warning.

Very intriguing... I will do some research today... going to visit a bookstore

anyway. I also noticed that a number of websites said this same thing. I know

that it is often used in jewelry so I think it was a little strange. Perhaps

its because some people are very sensitive to its strong energy.

Hi Everyone,

Here is a website that lists the more common toxic stones, by no means

all inclusive, but lists the stones that the average person would come

into contact and then some. Another web site:

http://pjentoft.com/f-55-TOXIC-STONES.html

.. I found both to be very helpful when creating my crystal class.
