Guest guest
Hi Julie Here are a couple of tricks that often work before launching into a full treatment plan • strong sustained finger nail pressure on LI.1 shang yang • nipping the skin over the shoulder (C3, 4 innervation) • strong pressure over the sternoclavicular junction (above the phrenic nerve) • deep breath holding, or rebreathing deeply into a paper bag • sneezing • pressure on the eyeballs • carotid sinus massage Will Maclean

Guest guest
Julie, my understanding is that stimulating the phrenic nerve is the key as mentioned by Will. Strong pressure over the sternoclavicular junction, deep breathing, etc all function to stimulate the phrenic nerve. One other method not mentioned is to firmly squeeze the point Zhong Kui (Middle Eminence) located on the dorsal aspect of the middle finger in the middle of the middle (PIP) knuckle. This is usually less effective than pressure over the SC joint though as its impact on the phrenic nerve is less direct. As a matter of fact, I don’t recall the phrenic nerve branching into the hand, but that is the remedy and reasoning I was taught. I read the chapter in Sionneau, and it is good and complete. But any other ideas? The patient has been hiccupping for 6 days with no relief. Has tried western medications (Thorazine, etc.) with no relief. This was probably brought on by stress and overwork. He tends to be hot and is very frustrated right now. I don't have time to present it all, but what I am really asking is if people have had success with extreme hiccups, and any advice would be appreciated. Guest guest
I meant to include this info in my post on hiccups, it was culled from WebMD: “The phrenic nerve originates in the upper half of the spinal cord, between the third and fifth cervical vertebrae, and extends to innervate the diaphragm muscle. It is responsible for transmitting the nerve impulses to the diaphragm which cause it to contract and expand, facilitating breathing.” This is the mechanism by which the phrenic nerve contributes to hiccups. Guest guest
Tim, Since the spinal roots C3, C4 and C5 give rise to the phrenic nerve, this also overlaps the upper portion of the brachial plexus (C4) C5- T1. Thus, sensory innervation in the hand will have references to phrenic nerve origins at C4 and C5. That give credence to your hand stimulation point.
