If Jackie is referring to Peacock ore (the only stone I am familiar with using

peacock in the name), that is actually a nickname due to the colors from

tarnishing that occur. The correct name for the stone is Bornite.

Hope this helps.

So how do I know if it is Calcopyrite or Bornite?  In So. Calif.  it is referred

to as " Peacock

Rock " .

By the way, I've been at this 15 years and consider myself quite creative, but

you people put me to shame! How informed and resourceful you are! (sincerely).

Jackie they are one in the same. Just different names for the same stone.

Perhaps what happened was a long time ago, someone found the stone originally

and named it. Then someone else found the same stone and had never heard/seen it

so gave it a new name. I can see where this could have occurred prior to the

technology age on more then one occasion. When you consider that quartz is found

all over the world and most crystals/stones/minerals grow in more then one place

on the planet. So, when news traveled S L O W L Y back in the day (unlike today

with computer technology and the web) it would have been very easy to find the

same type of crystal on opposite sides of the planet and it get 2 different

names but be the same crystal.

Jackie-

> So how do I know if it is Calcopyrite or Bornite?

I'd like to respectfully offer that Chalcopyrite and Bornite are not

the same stones. They are both copper iron sulfides, but they are, in

fact, distinctly different, albeit closely related stones.

Chalcopyrite's chemistry is CuFeS2, while Bornite's chemistry is Cu5FeS4.

Bornite and Chalcopyrite often grow together, and the name Peacock Ore

was originally applied to Bornite or to the intergrowth of Bornite and

Chalcopyrite. That's not necessarily the case now. (See below.)

One simple, but not foolproof way to tell whether you're looking at

Bornite or Chalcopyrite is to look at the color of the tarnish or

oxidation. Bornite usually turns shades of purple or blue when it

oxides, whereas Chalcopyrite turns shades of yellow or green.

The reality is that most of the " Peacock Ore " one sees is chemically

treated (with acid) to artificially produce the colorful tarnish.

True, natural Peacock Ore is somewhat difficult to find. The great

majority of the " Peacock Ore " and " Bornite " that you find now is

actually treated Chalcopyrite.

Unless you're buying the stones from someone who knows a) where it

collected and b) when, it's safe to assume that your " Peacock

Ore/Bornite " is probably treated Chalcopyrite.

The energy of natural Peacock Ore is quite different than the treated

stones. It's like the great difference between heat treated Amethyst

sold as " Citrine " (which is the overwhelming majority of " Citrine " out

there) and a true, natural Citrine.

I hope the above is helpful. There's a lot of confusion about these

two stone spirits.

Fabeku

p.s. If you're interested, you can read more about the differences

between Chalcopyrite and Bornite in a good science book on stones, or

on any of online databases devoted to this subject.

Hi Fabeku,

Thank you so much for the explanantion and correction.  I was not sure of the

answer so of course looked it up on the web and they did not know the

difference...at least where I checked.  So many thanks....

Enjoy your day,

Dawn Jewels

There is a fair bit of confusion about these two stones in some

circles. Glad what I shared was helpful.
