Guest guest
Basically... All of the scams are based on two things... 1. Greed 2.Fear Since are are talking about money issues... they are using Greed. I have had these as well. Someone wants to buy 500 $1 tumbled stones, etc... or all of our Rubies. They will also want you to ship them ASAP or sooner and of course are willing to pay for it (with the stolen credit card of course. :-) ) These scams are pretty easy to spot unless you let the greed monster take over. Be careful, be safe and Have a Great Holiday! Guest guest
FYI I have been posting to craigslist and they have warnings all over the place about scams on money orders so I guess it is a big thing and plates are everywhere for easy access for fraud. From what I hear the best thing is a Pay Pal account where they can only use credit not a check. Any other suggestions? It is the season for sales and I was contacted by one of theses great Nigerian scam artists. This one is not new but aimed at us on line sellers. They contact you wanting to buy. You send them a price they agree and send their " credit card info " . These cards are stolen and by the time merchants are realizing the problem they have already shipped the goods. The thieves then get the goods and resell them. I just wanted to give those who run businesses a heads up. This holiday season be careful how you sell your goods. Guest guest
So any suggestions from anyone one what is the best method or safest? (yes I will trust my judgment, but I am new to this. I am not wild about doing it - but there is no other choice but to take something. Sorry I know this isn't the topic of this line - but I would appreciate in and all input. I like to play devils advocate - but in this case I just need to know others experience Thank you, Rebecca --- On Tue, 12/16/08, John Van Rees <john wrote: John Van Rees <john Re: [CrystalHW] warning to all internet sellers Tuesday, December 16, 2008, 8:09 PM Rebecca, Paypal can be mis used with stolen credit cards as well.... use good sense... don't get greedy and you should be fine. Guest guest
> These scams are pretty easy to spot unless you let the greed monster > take over. Hi John, These are usually very easy to spot except 2 years ago I had a person order very specific pieces of my jewelry and the deal was under way until I received the money order for well over the total. That is when the bells went off for me, I contacted the RCMP and they took over giving the information to the FBI. I just wanted to give the heads up because again this person was very specific as to what he wanted, for me this time I was on guard because I am a dealer for an international company, there is a Nigerian based dealer I know this as I have photos of his latest sport facility done for a school in Nigeria. I asked this person to contact that dealer as I don't ship internationally and he refused. Normally this are easy to spot but when they are specific and not outrageous in their requests it is a little harder. Jessica
Guest guest
Rebecca, For my personal side things, my yarn and fiber crafts and jewelry I will only take Western Union money orders as the person has to go in personally to get one and if there is any fraud Western Union is liable if they take a stolen credit card not me. I don't take bank drafts or cashier cheques and I don't take credit cards or personal cheques. I will use paypal if it is an ebay item but only then. I am very careful with how and who I do business with and if the customer fights me on my procedures then I can be confident they are trying to pull something. A real customer will be thankful for your caution as you are trying to protect them also. For my company I provide flooring and sport surfaces so anyone looking to do business with me there is going to be looking for quotes, colors, and a professional sales pitch not just a quick over the internet exchange. I have done internet based sales for the company but it did involve a lot of talking and work back and forth so it was clearly not a scam. Cons don't like to waste a lot of time so talk a lot to them, ask a lot of questions and if they get frustrated or are vague and indifferent then you need to be cautious. One other thing I will do is phone the bank that the money order is drawn on if I have to take a money order. I will tell them I just recieved a money order drawn on their bank and I am checking to see if it is a real one or a fraud. Most banks won't, actually they can't, tell you who banks there but will help you find out if it is a fraud or not. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Then there is also the otherside of the coin....the buyer being cheated by the seller. I have bid on items on e-Bay...won the item...sent the money...and that is the last I heard. Even e-Bay and PayPal couldn't help me out. And this happened with sellers with high rating scores. So, I guess its buyer and seller both beware.
