Guest guest
T.K. Lymphedema restricting bandages, Cellulitis Friday, September 11, 2009, 10:27 AM Dear PH Q and A Team, I am currently working with an overweight, breast cancer survivor, woman who suffers from Lymphedema and has been instructed to use a pressurized arm sleeve to help move the fluid out of her arm. However now in addition to that she has developed fluid on one of her lower legs that burst and left her with a raw, painful, infected leg that she describes as feeling like its on fire. The doctor told her that her leg was cellulitis which I know nothing about. They also told her not to use any constricting bandages but she needs something in that category for her arm that has Lymphedema. I have a Lymphedema protocol but can you give me a protocol for the cellulitis. Also is this a condition that can be healed completely because she has been told she will probably have to live with the Lymphedema for the rest of her life. ===================== Dear T.K. A Loving Atma Namaste! Thank you for your email. MEDICAL BACKGROUND Cellulitis: " Cellulitis is a spreading bacterial infection in the skin and the tissues just beneath the skin. It may be caused by many diffrerent bacteria; the most common is Streptococcus. Streptococci spead rapidly over a wide area because they produce enzymes that prevent tissues from confining the infection. Staphylococci, another type of bacteria, also can cause cellulitis, but it is usually limited to a smaller area. Other bacteria cause cellulitis after certain types of injuries, such as animal bites or skin injuries that occur in freshwater or salt water. Cellulitis most commonly develops in the legs. Usually the infection appears after the skin has been damaged by an injury, ulceration, athlete's foot, or dermatitis. Areas of the skin that become swollen with fluid (edema) are most vulnerable. Cellulitis tends to recur in or near scars from surgery (for example, surgery for varicose veins). However, cellulitis also can occur in skin that hasn't been injured. The infection can spread quickly and can enter the lymph vessels and bloodstream. When this happens, infection can spread throughout the body. SYMPTOMS AND COMPLICATIONS: The first symptoms are redness and tenderness over a small area of skin. The infected skin becomes hot and swollen, and it may look like an orange peel. In one form of cellulitis, the edges of the infected area are raised. Small red spots commonly appear; larger spots caused by bleeding in the skin rarely appear. Small fluid-filled blisters may appear on the infected skin and may rupture. As the infection spreads to a larger area, nearby lymph nodes may become enlarged and tender. Lymph nodes in the groin may be affected by leg infections; lymph nodes in the armpit may be affected by arm infections. Red streaks running between the infection and the nearby lymph nodes may appear on the skin. A person with cellulites may have a fever, chills, a rapid heart rate, headache, and low blood pressure and may become confused. Sometimes these symptoms start several hours before any symptoms appear on the skin, but in many cases they don't occur at all. Occassionally, abscesses may form as a result of cellulitis. Rare but serious complications include the spread of the infection under the skin resulting in tissue death and the spread of the infection through the blood stream to other parts of the body. When cellulitis affects the same site repeatedly, nearby lymph vessels may be damaged, causing permanent swelling of the affected tissue. " FURTHER INFORMATION ON EDEMA: Herbal and natural products: Many herbs and products composed of a blending of these herbs are used against edema. Such herbs are: Dandelion, Gingko biloba, horse chestnut, buchu, goldenrod, corn silk, horsetail, juniper, butchers broom, cleaver and ginger. Some people have experienced a good effect from using apple cider vinegar. The flavonide rich product pycnognenol extracted from the bark of the French maritime pine has shown promising effects against edema according to scientific studies. The flavonides hydroxyethylrutosides also seem to have good effect against edema. Other natural substances that may help to treat edema are the flavonids diosmin and hesperidin and vitamin C.
