>Can someone furnish a good definition of exactly what a Meridian is?

They're paths of energy flow.

There are twelve main ones associated with organs and two of the " Strange Flow "

meridians that will be very important in healing.

The 12 associated with organs are Liver, Gallbadder, Heart, Small Intestine,

Triple Heater, Pericardium, Spleen, Stomach, Lung, Large Intestine, Kidney, and

Bladder. The Triple Heater (also called Triple Warmer, Triple Burner) and the

Pericardium are not organs in the Western sense but are recognized as organs in

TCM.

The two Strange Flow meridians with the most importance in healing are the

Governor Vessel and the Conception vessel. People who are familiar with

meditation and kundalini are already familiar with these two. The Governor

Vessel (GV) runs up the center of the back and over the head and terminates just

above the upper lip. The Conception Vessel runs up the center of the front of

the body and terminates under the lower lip.

The Governor Vessel is the most Yang of all the Yang meridians. Remember in a

previous post I said Yang meridians transverse the back and outer edges of the

body.

The Conception Vessel is the most Yin of all the Yin meridians. Yin meridians

transverse the front and inner edges of the body (like the inside edges of the

legs and the arms.

I've been informed that the term " meridian " is a poor translation and " channel "

would be a better term, but since people are more familiar with meridian, I

continue to use it.

Problems arise when there is a block to energy flow in a meridian. This can

create Excess in some parts of the body. Also when there's not enough Qi flowing

(Energy Deficiency) or the balance of the energy is incorrect (as in too much or

too little Yang or Yin). Or when the energy isn't flowing (Stagnation), or it's

flowing in the wrong direction. (Energy in the Spleen meridian is supposed to

flow from bottom to top. When it flows downward, it creates health problems like

prolapsed stomach, uterus, anus, etc. Energy flow in the Stomach meridian is

supposed to be from top to bottom. When it flows upwards instead, this creates

problems like hiccuping, vomiting, belching, acid reflux, etc.)

There are points where meridians connect with other meridians.

I've given you more information than you've asked for, but you're ready for it.

The main point to absorb at this point is meridians are paths of energy flow and

when that energy flow gets messed up, it creates health problems.

BTW, for the herbalists on the message group, whenever an Energy Tonic herb like

Ginseng is given or a Yang Tonic herb like Epidmedium is given, it's often a

good idea to also include an herb like Chinese licorice or jujube. What either

of these two do is to help to open the meridians and guarantee the smooth flow

of energy. A person can be Qi and/or Yang Deficient but also have blocks to

energy flow. When you give an herb that adds Qi or Yang energy to the body, that

added energy will be blocked from flowing smoothly and this can create problems.

It's like trying to force more water through a hose with a block in it. Try to

put more water in, and the sides of the hose below the block start to bulge.

They may even blow out. Herbs like Chinese licorice and jujube open up the

meridians so that extra energy can flow through it.

As you probably can tell, acupuncture and acupressure are not the only ways to

manipulate energy in a meridian. Herbs can do it too. Sometimes acupuncture/

acupressure is better, sometimes herbs are better, and sometimes either will

help.

Hi Marcie,

Some of the emotions listed match up with TCM. And, you will

sometimes

see the terms for emotions expressed in slightly different ways.

It may come from different translations. The Spiritual Axis

speaks of dreams that one may interpret in different ways, too.

Then, in the case of Liver the " happiness " would be referring

to

Liver's function of the smooth flow of Qi and this having a deep

influence on one's emotional state. If this function is

normal,

Qi flows normally and one's emotional life is happy. If

Qi flow is obstructed this will give rise to emotional

frustration, irritability, depression, repressed anger. (Maciocia)

Additionally, Liver contols the ability to plan one's life and it's

related Fu, Gallbladder, contols the capacity to make decisions.

In TCM, The Seven Emotional Factors refer to endogenous patohgenic

factors involved in disease. They affect the Zang Fu organs by

disturbing

the flow of Qi and Blood. When the HT, LIV, and SP are affected the

Shen is affected as well.

LIV/ GB - Anger (depression) Causes Qi

to: ascend

KID/BL - Fear

(terror)

descend

HT/KID - Shock

(firght)

scatter (chaotic Qi)

HT/SI - Joy(excitement,

love)

slow, relax

SP/ST - Pensiveness

(concentration)

knot, get stuck

LU/SP - Worry

knot, stagnate

LU/LI - Sadness, grief, melancholy

sorrow

weaken, be consumed,

dissolve

Anger often affects the ST/SP as well.

Fear depletes Essence. (above from Tyme)

Don't know about circulation nor thyroid. Nor from what other

philosophy

Mr. Diamond's list might derive. Maybe someone else recognizes them

and

others may have different lists. Kit

Good morning! Hoping for some

information.

I just got the book LIFE ENERGY by John Diamond that claims to use

12

acupuncture meridians. They are as follows-

1)LUNG- tolerance or intolerance

2)LIVER- happiness or unhappiness

3)GALL BLADDER- love or rage (there's my extremes...)

4)SPLEEN- faith in future or anxiety of future

5)KIDNEY- sexual issues

6)LARGE INTESTINES- self-worth or guilt

7) CIRCULATION/SEX-generosity, relaxation or sexual tension, regret,

remorse

8)HEART-love/forgiveness or anger

9)STOMACH-contentment or disappointment/disgust

10)THYROID-lightness or heaviness/depression'

11)SMALL INTESTINE- joy or sadness

12)BLADDER-peace/harmony or restlessness/impatience

The most important area in the book is the Thymus.

My question is- are these the actual meridians used in TCM and do

the

emotions fit?

Circulation/sex is Worsleys name for pericardium. I expect that

Thyroid is equivalent to Triple Heater.

These are 10 of the 12 basic meridians used in TCM.

The Lung (Yin) and Large Intestine (Yang) also are affected by issues

of grief and learning to let go.

Joy usually is associated with the Heart and Small Intestine.

The Kidneys and Bladder are most affected by fear and fright.

The Liver and Gall Bladder are associated with anger, rage, and

frustration.

The Spleen and Stomach by pensiveness or obsessing.

Actually it's the Yin Organs which are most affected and affecting,

but in practical terms there is influence on the Yang Organs as well.

A more common name for this one is the Pericardium, and it is one of

the TCM basic 12.

This one is not one of the 12. The 12th is the Triple Heater, aka

Triple Burner which plays some key roles in TCM Fluid physiology.

In addition there are 8 Extraordinary meridians which include the

Conception Vessel which runs up the middle of the front of the body

and the Governing Vessel which runs up the middle of the back.

Got to go. Library time on the computer is over.

Dear Morris,

Namast.

Thank you for your email.

Just as the physical body has blood vessels through

which blood flows, the energy body has meridians or

nadis which are fine invisible energy channels through

which prana and bioplasmic matter flows to envigorate

and nourishes the energy body.

Chakras are energy centers. They have several

dimensions. Chakras are like power plants that provide

energy and control the internal vital organs and the

different parts of the body.
