Perhaps not Fathers appear to be worse off when it comes to communicating with their children. Only 7% boys and 4% girls aged 15-24 discuss “growing up” issues with their fathers, according to a recently-concluded youth survey. Mothers were equally bad when it came to their sons, with only 6% boys confiding and “discussing life” with them. In comparison, 77% of girls spoke more freely to their mothers, mostly about issues relating to menstruation. The survey, conducted by the International Institute for Population Sciences and Population Council and endorsed by the Union health ministry, spoke to nearly 51,000 married and unmarried young males and females from six states — Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. The survey found that school performance, which is not a sensitive topic, was the most common subject of conversation between children and their parents. In contrast, embarrassing topics, such as romance, relationships and reproduction, were rarely discussed with either parent (only 2% of young men and 6% of young women did so). When it came to reproductive issues, children were equally secretive with both parents. The findings also suggest that parents controlled their children’s social interaction, particularly if it it involved members of the opposite sex. For example, 69% of young men and 84% of young women expected parental disapproval if they brought a friend of the opposite sex home. In contrast, just 9% of men and 5% of women reported that their mother and father would be angry if they brought home friends of the same gender. But there were some differences in perception on this matter. Among young men, for example, 64% of those from Maharashtra and the southern states perceived disapproval from both parents, but 71-80% of those from northern states said the same. For young women it was 74-85% and 82-97% respectively. Last date for application is April 30, 2010 State of the Urban Youth 2010 - 2011 Report Launched The world today is younger than it has ever been, with half of the global population under the age of 25, and the majority of those living and growing up in cities and slums. This “youth bulge” defines one of the great challenges of the 21st century, this being how do governments at all levels overcome this urban divide, a divide where youth are finding themselves marginalized and excluded? The State of the Urban Youth 2010-2011 report uniquely focuses on calling for the global community to level the playing field for urban youth. In this report UN-HABITAT focuses on youth exclusion from opportunities in urban areas, with the report imploring that now is the time to provide targeted programmes for urban youth so as to assure their equal access to opportunities. This report is based on a survey on youth opportunity and inequality given in four rapidly urbanizing cities: Rio de Janeiro, Mumbai, Kingston, Nairobi and Lagos. The findings of the survey suggest that young people have unequal access to basic services such as housing, education and employment, which leads to the youth not being able to have meaningful work or study. The report suggests that inequality in earnings and assets are related to the unequal opportunities that youth face throughout their lives. Education was found to be the key determinant of equal opportunity. Other factors which affected this opportunity were: predetermined circumstances beyond the youths control such as gender, race, ethnicity, education level of parents, disability and region of birth; family resources such as childhood residence and access to basic services and a secure shelter could effect the mental and physical growth of a child, which in turn could limit their social, economic and cultural networks; intergenerational inequalities, where parents who are educated are more willing to invest in their offspring’s education and place high expectations on them receiving good results; and gender disparities in education which lead to unequal opportunities in later life. Intergroup on Youth in European Parliament formed An Intergroup or Forum of Parliamentarians from different political groups on Youth has been created in the European Parliament and its first constitutive meeting held on 11 February 2010 in Strasbourg. The Intergroup, established by a decision of the Conference of the Presidents on 10 December 2009, allows the building up of a truly cross-sectoral policy approach to youth issues in Europe. he Intergroup on Youth aims to bridge the gap between young people and the European Union, and it is an important platform for consultation between Members of Parliament and interest groups. The priorities of the Intergroup are to deal with the four themes of youth autonomy and social inclusion, mobility, education and active citizenship. Youth Delegates attended the 48th session of the UN Commission for Social Development Seven Youth Delegates from Belgium, Germany, Romania and Switzerland represented youth in their countries at the 48th Commission for Social Development (CSA) which was held from 3-12 February 2010, at the UN Headquarters in New York. Youth Delegates are a vital link between young people and the intergovernmental processes at the United Nations. After going through rigorous selection processes in their own countries, Youth Delegates travel around the country, visiting schools and meeting youth organizations in preparation for their role as representatives of youth. They then bring the concerns of the young people in their own countries to the attention of world leaders at meetings such as the above mentioned UN Commission for Social Development, as well as the UN General Assembly. Youth Delegates often form part of their official national delegations.
