Pregnant women at risk from Tamiflu

He said the medication is believed to adversely affect those carrying a child.

"There are only a few pregnant women [in quarantine], and they are given special consideration in terms of dosages of Tamiflu," he said.

Chinese University respiratory medicine professor David Hui Shu- cheong said the avian flu experience indicated pregnancy is a high risk factor for serious symptoms - or even death - as immunity drops for expectant mothers. But Tamiflu side- effects on pregnant women and their babies were uncertain, giving rise to controversies over the use of the drug, Hui said, so doctors need to take care.
