Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009 This morning a petition calling for a moratorium of the rounding up of thousands of wild horses from western rangelands was delivered to the White House. Over 100 horse, animal and environmental groups signed onto the petition along with a few celebrities and politicians. The overall purpose of the moratorium is to force the Department of Interior, the Bureau of Land Management and Congress to take the wild horse issue seriously and overhaul a program that is presently resulting in the demise of America's wild free-roaming horses and burros, and in the process is generating astronomical costs for American taxpayers. The petition was originally initiated by the Equine Welfare Alliance and the Cloud Foundation, and was immediately assisted and supported by a swelling number of prominent groups and individuals.
