Re: quotation from president of india " Dr.V.N. Sharma " <vnsh44,

Dear all: I may be wrong but it is possible that many participants in this discussion may have gone to school say after 1955 or so i.e. they passed their Matriculation around 1970 or after. I should like to point out that during 1950s to about 1970 approximately, the general situation in government schools and colleges was reasonably good in every sense of the term. I went to an ordinary government school in Himachal as did all my friends; we passed our Matriculation in 1960 or so; we are all reasonably well placed in life and in many ways I can say with confidence are responsible citizens. We still remember our school, teachers and classmates with great nostalgia. The school discourse was rich: healthy academic, conceptual discussions; sharing notes; preparing collectively for exams; sharing

concerns about social issues with all seriousness and of course a lot of fun...many of my friends, in fact most of them, at school came from very poor backgrounds and in many cases found it very difficult to pay the school fees...but they all made it...

That's why people like us who have seen those government schools so deeply regret the loss of that heritage; that's why we have so many problems with the RTE Bill as it is. I have no hesitation in saying that the NORMS Schedule that is being paraded around with such pride is not even a patch on my ordinary government school of the 1950-60s.

Somebody should answer: Why have the state and central government not been able to sustain and multiply what was already in place; if not anything better!!!!Rama.
