Hello ALL

Good Afternoon!

I would like to say Hello to everyone. I am new to the group. I run a

small herb garden and teach classes during the summer months. I am always

interested in learning new ways to use herbs, oils and make soaps, bath

salts, etc.....

We have a small web site that I just got up and running.

http://charter.net/puddleDucks/index.htm

I look forward to learning more and sharing ideas.

Yours aye,

Lisa

Hey Linda,

I do straight Valerian root. No mixture with other herbs, in the

gelcaps I use. Was your valerian root standardized in any way? Brands

vary widely. From my own experience, in my opinion, the Twinlab

variety flat-out sucks, while the Nature's Resource brand I currently

use is very good. The latter company makes sure they have a certain

amount of the valerian root's active ingredient in each serving.

If I do Valerian root mixed with anything else at all, it's Bedtime

tea from the Yogi brand. Very nice and potent. Works even better than

the above gelcaps.

Also, as others have asked, what's your diet like? Too much sugar?

Any chocolate? Refined flours or packaged foods? Also, do you also

have indications of hormone imbalances like PMS, etc? Perhaps this

could be a cause of insomnia, too.

Hope that helps :)

Can you make your own Valerian Capsules if you buy the Valerian fresh or dried?

Yes and this is much better than any over-the-counter product you can buy...

As another note about capsules just for yours and others information:

The reason why teas and tinctures are king, is because the biochemicals of the herbs have already been extracted and are very assimilable. Powders in capsules can sometimes be next to impossible to absorb if a person's digestion is very poor or compromised.

Jen,

Any over the counter, MLMs etc are not that great... You would be well ahead to purchase your herbs or grow them and make your own formulas, capsules, etc.

And Natures Resource is not anywhere near as good as the real thing plus this list does not promote "over the counter" herbs. You will find in the message archives discussions on how these are no where near as potent as they say and other facts..

Valerian did not make me sleep either. Well it did a little but it took over 3 hours to get the effect the times I tried, and when it hit it wasn't a big deal and the drowsiness didn't really last that long. I guess everyone's different. Plus it gave me heart palpitations during the drowsy period for about 5 minutes, really wierd

Hi Tiffany,

Try adding Scullcap or Hops to your brew. Sometimes Valerian by itself is not enough for some people. Actually, a tea is much quicker acting than the capsules. Or you can make a tincture or extract of it and use that. But yes, you can cap all of this and try it that way if you so choose.

Linda, sometimes your sleep cycle can just be "off". Try getting some melatonin and taking one every night before bed for a week. It may kick you back into gear.

Very easy to make Tiffany. Just add your herbs into a large mouth jar, say maybe half way up and then cover with alcohol two inches over the top of the herbs. Start your tincture on the new moon and it will be ready on the full moon for pressing, straining or whatever.

LOL! i had used some in a nerve formula tincture combination. it's good there.

Hey Tiffany,

One thing that I noticed when I was converting from allopathic or

over-the-counter remedies to natural remedies was that natural

remedies, while potent, are sometimes more subtle. I had to kinda be

paying attention at first. My valerian didn't instantly quite knock

me out or make me drowsy. Valerian takes enough edge off and calms

down your nervous system so that you can sleep if you want to. But in

my experience, it is still quite safe to take valerian and drive. :)

So its effect is more subtle IMO, and one has to be kinda tuned-in.

Hehe in other words, one can't drink a bunch of coffee or eat a bunch

of chocolate before bed and then take valerian root. :)

(My fiancee also claims that lots of the natural remedies that work

so beautifully for me have no effect on him. That could just be his

chemistry. But then again, he won't do tinctures or teas or anything

like that--he likes capsules and maybe tablets. But he has a

digestive problem, (says our ND), so those capsules may not be doing

him much good. He has not quite been thru as much of a detox process

as I have and with his childhood thru adulthood eating habits, his

toxicity is probably more extensive than mine. So just maybe, a

cleanse might do y'all some good?)

Hope that helps :)

Tell me more about pressing and what it entails. Also as far as the new moon and full moon stuff (which Im very intune to by the way), does it matter if Im doing it outside or inside? During the period that it is soaking, does it need to be outside maybe on the balcony where the moonlight can get into it?

Thanks JEn. Im definately not drinking coffee and eating chocolate before bed..lol. My experience with Valerian has been all OTC brands, not necessarily pure or of a strength I need them to be. I think my biggest problems is the hectic life I lead...I dont have time to stop and think until I lay down at night most days. Im working on it.

Check out the files How to make a tincture under How to and The Moon under Dr.IanShillington... should answer your questions... and no you want to store your tincture where it doesn't get to hot or cold and is dark. (like a cabinet)

Hi Tiffany,

You don't need to put your tincture outside in the moonlight for the moon to have its effect on it. The moon will do its thing no matter where you place your tincture. Now for doing an oil infusion you would place that out on your balcony in direct sunlight, as this works the best. Second best would be to place it someplace where it will be nice and toasty all the time without cooking. Or use a crock pot. Okay I know you didn't ask about oil infusions.

Pressing is easy and any way you can find to press the liquid out of the herbs will work as long as you don't use aluminum.

Lawless' books have their place, and their layouts are quite lovely, but

don't believe ALL that you read in them. She gets a little " Aromatherapy

Novelish " in her oil attributes and actions ;) It is a common flaw in

many Aromatherapy books. They give the oils he same actions as are

attributed to the plants themselves and in many cases the actions are

not identical in both.

Cooking with herbs, and growing them is a wonderful pleasure! And as far

as cooking with EO's goes, that can be a fun experience for the taste

buds too.

Hi Mary,

Wondered where you were :o)

I did mention about the convetion, etc...

I suggested that now that the few people who decided to vote on

meeting and potential places, that perhaps we can narrow the state

selection down? Perhaps eliminate the states that got less than 4

votes?

If we can concentrate on less states, perhaps we can then be more

serious at looking at costs involved to go/stay there (including

camping for all of you dying to put up a tent!)

Also so we can see what herbal or other natural type things we could

do in those respective states. With the number of choices we have

right now, it would take too long.

Also maybe once we attach some data on costs and potential activites,

we can get MORE PEOPLE to speak up and voice their opinions????

out of close to 2000 members, it seems silly that we have only had

around 40 respond!
