I have treated several cases suffering from the above in the course

of recent years. It is a very very difficult disease and the aim of

the treatment must be to eliminate the severe pain and disability

involved in this disorder. Aiming at the Ben (cause of disease) at

the initial stage will not bring any results. In order to alleviate

the pain and disability, one must have a very good needle technique

for this problem, technique is of prime importance here. The patient

must lie in prone position with one or two pillows stuck under his

stomach, so that his back is arched as much as possible. Use thick

needles (at least 28 g.) and puncture only the Huato points

bilaterally. Choose those Huato that parallel the pain focus. Use

deep insertion so that his deqi is rather strong and propagating in

the pain area. As an addition, puncture Li-4 and Liv-3.

If cold is predominant, use Fire needle on the points close to the

pain focus. (See about this technique my article about Female sexual

disfunction at: http://www.acumedico.com) If heat co-exist DO NOT

use moxa or fire needle. You may use herbs to address his basic

condition by small doses and very carefully. Acupuncture MUST be the

main treatment modality here. Also dietary adjustments as well as

life style must be addressed.

My brother has AS. I have the marker gen, although my GP doesn't feel that

the arthritis in my lower back is AS (Having the marker gene and the way my

lower back feels ... I doubt her diagnosis since she is not a specialist.)

Anyway, I find that hematite helps with AS some. Staying mobile is also

something that is important. My brother works out regularly. I find my lower

back

feels worse the longer I have to sit.

Blessings to your eve all.
