Guest guest
Some of you may remember some time ago I posted looking for the proper name of a stone that had left me who's common name I was told was Iron Hat. I tried describing it as best I could as a deep chocolate colored stone with striations that ran at perpendicular angles to each other on all sides. I got a lot of response on Iron Hat but nothing fit the description. Well, this stone has come back to me and I wanted to post a photo of it so if anyone knew its proper name or where it came from maybe they could share that info. I've never seen another and believe me I've attended many a rock and gem show and entered dozens of shops searching. Here is a link to the photo. http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x310/diosaspics/ironhat.jpg (Referring to the thread on asking for stones. Guest guest
IAloha Diosa. . .Is the stone heavy or light? Is it a piece that is broken off at edges or a crystalization? It looks like it might be a piece of raw unpolished Golden Tiger Eye which has a high iron content. It is difficult to see the striations in picture, but would have a slight glimmer or chatoyancy if it is Tiger Eye. I think of it as a warm, friendly stone. Is said to be grounding, inspire self conficence and be good for those working in isolation offering a sense of brother/sisterhood with world at large as well as being a stone that attracts money. Hope this is helpful. . . Guest guest
Hi guys, No, it isn't tiger eye. I have several specimens of that and they are nothing alike. The striations are physically present and can be felt, they are not variations in color. Thanks > Here is a link to the photo. > > http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x310/diosaspics/ironhat.jpg > >
Guest guest
Tiger eye can look different depending on where in the world they come from. I have several that are very different. But this stone is unique alone because of the shape - pretty cool! Try a Gem site - (like the ones for stone shows.) Rebecca diosad730 <diosad wrote: Hi guys, No, it isn't tiger eye. Guest guest
Looks and feels to me like a citrine surrounded in an odd substance. Is it soft? I don't know why but the area around it feels like coal. That's all I'm getting. Hope it helps. > Hi guys, > > No, it isn't tiger eye. I have several specimens of that and they are > nothing alike. Guest guest
Hi, I responded to a couple of posts yesterday but they haven't shown up, guess they got lost in the cyberspace mailroom. I like the Tourmaline but no, it isn't the stone. The photo I had posted was taken under natural light and the stone itself is very dark, about the color of a Hershey's milk chocolate. Here is another with flash. It shows color that isn't visible under natural light and isn't really representative of the stone's appearance. At any rate I think I will take the stone to some shows and see what the old timers have to say about it. Nothing like having the specimen in hand to help identify it. The person that I got the stone from told me it was from an old collection so it may be a stone that isn't mined or is not common these days. (they could also have been totally pulling my chain as I have since come to doubt their integrity :-)) Anyway, for your enjoyment, here is a picture taken with flash. http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x310/diosaspics/Ironhat3.jpg It is not really representative of the stone but does show the structure better. I will let you all know if I learn anything more. Thanks for all your help. diosa , kcs72193 wrote: > > Could it be Dravite - Brown Tourmaline ? > Here is a link to a picture > _http://webmineral.com/specimens/picshow.php?id=1069_ (http://webmineral.com/specimens/picshow.php?id=1069) > > Kelly > > > > > **************Start the year off right. Guest guest
Aloha Lynn. . Good idea to ask the old timers. . . many have worked in mines and have a great interest in and extensive knowledge of stones. Dravite is a variety of Tourmaline and pieces that I have seen crystallized in six sided 'tube' with three faced top, so my guess would be calcite or fluorite if it is crystallization and not a cut or broken off piece. Calcite has a waxy feel and Fluorite usually layered. When living in southern Oregon I sometimes took pieces to the Crater Rock Museum. There are some nice specimen photos can be found at their website www.craterrock.com . If you email latest pic to them at info someone may be able to identify. I'm really curious, too. Guest guest
I found a link to spalerite http://www.curiogrove.com/minerals/sph001.htm The picture looks much like your stone, with inclusions and the markings on the dark stone. I don't know a thing about the properties of the stone, but you might want to check it out. Love and Light, Cindy
