ragged grapes and thoughts on life

 

This year beetles have eaten all the grapes before they were ripe enough

for humans to enjoy. These beetles are not native to the area and have

no natural predators. They leave the skins hanging on the vines dry torn

and empty rags that once held sweet nectars.

This is the first year that they have ever gotten all the grapes even

though there don't seem to be quite as many beetles as there have been

other years. We had very little rain last winter and the summer is now

persisting hot. Thoughts have power they effect the reality so I wonder

what thoughts of ours have brought the warming and the beetles . Some

people scoff at what they call " magical thinking " . The idea that we can

alter the climate and events around us with our thoughts and intentions

yet how can they say that we do not constantly have these effects with

the cumulative force of all of our actual thoughts.

This year has had a lot of events that on first thought I would wish to

have prevented or changed. Not just that of preserving the grape crop.

Just a slight shift in position and the truck that hit my dads car might

have missed it altogether and my dad and his wife would be tending their

garden now. Some small event might have changed events in Iraq on a

certain July day and " our " soldier could be laughing with friends

instead of buried in Rose Hills " Garden of Valor " .

Yet some things we cannot or should not change. I believe that we choose

our life plans before we are born , that we have missions and lessons

and options for various unfolding. That this is not the only life or

realm of reality . These plans are not always unchangeable and we may

have many different possibilities. We, from inside our lives, may be

unable to fathom the reasons for a particular event or path as it has

unfolded but in my deepest heart I know that these events were in some

cause that good comes of all things . One or two or five lives lost may

have saved thousands, may have redirected multitudes of confused people

onto their highest path, may lead to great discoveries or works of art

or writings. I know that the deaths of three people two old and one

young but all distinguished by kindness and purpose to protect and help

others have brought people together in the communities effected. Though

we see the tattered skins of grapes consumed unripe, hanging dry upon

the vines, this is/was but one season and in other seasons, in other

fields, on other vines, those fruits will grow and ripen again and

nurture others. The essence of life continues eternal.
