Guest guest
Found this a gentle reminder to be in touch with the 'beauty that surrounds us' As Summer appraches and Spring comes near an end, I listen to a beautiful mating call from one of the winged ones outside my window. A wonderful way to begin this beautiful day. Aloha pumehana to all! Beauty and the Heart When we enter the paradoxes of life – time and space, the infinite and the eternal, form and Spirit – and we allow the opposites to affect us deeply – through our senses and through our life energy – we enter transcendent simplicity, we fall in love, we are inspired by Beauty. We then affirm life, and accept death as a joyful part of it. We celebrate freedom without fleeing the pain and limitations of old ties and perceptions. We embrace others in full acceptance without bias or prejudice. We understand and forgive, and choose to give freely of ourselves. Beyond the impossible and the irrational is the Real – the Good, the True and the Beautiful. Both Beauty and the Heart refer to soul – that dimension of being we call consciousness that arises when we stand facing in opposite directions at the same time – toward eternity and toward time, toward infinity and toward space, toward unity and toward complexity. We stand in that dualism without being dualistic, for in consciousness we can accommodate the opposites. We do this by identifying with both. This identification results in the experience of being an individual while at the same time being the whole, and we find no contradiction in this experience. It is very easy in identifying with being an individual, for we do it all the time. It is not so easy to identify with the whole. This is where we need more experience. The only way this can take place is by being at peace, which implies no complex series of emotional reactions nor self-referencing (and therefore limiting) thoughts. Simplicity or peace is a state of being that occurs within the heart, the soul, the consciousness of being both Spirit and form at the same time. In this consciousness there is no room for ego as the centre of being, for ego is complex. Spirit and form must be given equal value in the Path of the Heart, the soul journey, for the beauty of the one is a dimension of the beauty of the other. Our contact with reality is always either directly in the form or directly in Spirit (such as occurs in meditation). But when beauty of the one is experienced, the door to the beauty of the other opens – but only if the beauty touches one’s heart and is experienced there. Soul as Heart is the instrument of union, and therefore the initial contact with beauty will draw one into its fuller dimensions. That which gives the soul in us its magnetic power to link the opposites is the fact that our soul is part of all soul. Our individual soul is part of the soul of humanity, which in turn is part of the planetary soul, which is part of the anima mundi (literally ‘soul of the world’). These are not souls but soul. Soul is singular, not plural. Soul is a force or power that creates union. It is omnipresent in all things. It is that bridge that is not seen that keeps form intrinsically tied to its Spirit cause. Soul is what creates a unity between time-space realities and their eternal-infinite source. It is the soul of things that demands our attention, that reaches out to our heart and to our imagination to grasp their essence. It is the soul in people who cry out: ‘Pay attention to me!’ When we are not conscious, this takes the illusion of ego crying out, but it is really soul behind ego doing it. When we face the one crying out and we are not conscious then we do not hear with our heart and do take the other into our heart. We are left then with only one option – judge, reject, condemn, ignore, accuse. We stand separate, outside of Love and untouched by Beauty. Why the call, ‘Pay attention to me?’ Everything and everyone sends out this message all the time. Behind this is another call – ‘Love me.’ And deeper still, another – ‘Be one with me.’ And finally, at the deepest level the radiation of the truth – ‘We are one.’ These messages come from the soul and can be heard only by the heart of another. The heart will hear it if it is not preoccupied with its own survival or isolated well-being. We experience the ‘We are one’ when we enter the Beauty of the other in our heart. Heart is not only receptive; it is also active. It is therefore both yin and yang functioning as one. The Heart observes carefully as it goes out of itself into the other. Through Heart we bring ourselves as individuals or parts into rhythmic harmony with the whole or the greater reality. In the biological world of the physical heart when a larger cell is brought into contact with a smaller cell, the smaller cell stops its rhythm (cell-beat) momentarily and then aligns its beat with the rhythm of the larger cell. This is analogous to what happens whenever the lesser in life is brought into contact with the greater. This is the power of transformation. When our consciousness contacts Beauty, that which is in our consciousness that is not harmonious with Beauty stops briefly from casting its influence and begins to align itself with Beauty. What is required is the persistent focus on Beauty for sufficient alignments and transformations to take place. What is most real and most fulfilling for any part is its place and function within the whole of which it is a part. Its growth or self realization occurs when it aligns itself most closely to that whole and functions as one with it. Our contact with Beauty enables this alignment to occur between our personality and Spirit, between our individuality and our group, and between our humanity and our divinity. We are one. Exercises: 1. What attitude on your part opens you to a deep experience of unity with another? 2. When Beauty touches you deeply what effects does it have on your thinking and acting? 3. How can you make the experience of Beauty a more consistent part of your daily life? Go beyond just understanding and attain more perspectives, experiences and integration to enable you to heal the past and create the future.
