Guest guest
Just a quick question. Is sard another name for carnelian, or are the two different stones? Thanks, Jean

Sard aka sardonix is a chalcedony and is used a lot for cups and goblets and ashtrays and carved lucky elephants stuff like that , Most that I have has a cream colored base though there is some orange, brown, yellow etc in it too and can be almost black. I did find this " Some kinds of sard closely resemble carnelian, but are usually rather harder and tougher, with a duller and more hackly fracture. Mineralogically the two stones pass into each other, and indeed they have often been regarded as identical, both being chalcedonic quartz colored with oxide of iron. " So apparently the answer to your question is No and Yes.
