I've found that many people find Opal challenging. In fact, someone I

know gets severe pain in her jaw each time she holds an Opal, even for

a moment. I know a significant number of other people who just can't

wear Opal for any extended length of time.

The medicine presented to us by the Opal spirits is one that touches

our emotions and sends them welling up to the surface - to be

experienced, examined, evaluated and so on. While I obviously can't say

whether this is true for you, most people I've met that find Opal

challenging have great difficulty expressing or fully experiencing

their emotions. Often there's an element of being emotionally

repressed. At times this may also include a tendency to hype up certain

emotions, while virtually ignoring others.

The person I mentioned above whose jaw hurts when in the presence of

Opal tends to be someone who holds their emotions pretty close to their

chest. You can feel their emotional energy, but it's not always

expressed. I wasn't terribly surprised to hear that they experience

this sensation when dancing with these stone spirits.

I am a big believer in the idea that stone spirits are both our Elders

and our teachers. I understand and relate to them as spirits, not

tools. In that way I look at their energy as a lightstream of lessons

and learning. Many of us, when encountering a lesson we're not eager to

receive, may tighten up, close down or do an about face and head in the

opposite direction. All of these can cause us to experience what we may

define as difficulties or problems with the energy of a particular

stone spirits.

When we encounter these challenges we must make a decision. We can

either settle into listening, seeking to discern the opportunity being

presented to us, or discontinue the dance in favor of a more

comfortable road. Whatever choice we make, it's always right. When

we're ready for the lesson, and the initiation it often brings, we will

stay with the knotted energy and slowly unravel it until we've reached

the gift held within our experience.

I know most books of stone spirits encourage us to look at the source

of these problem as being somehow linked to the stones themselves -

they need cleansing, charging, activating, harmonizing, dedicating,

etc. - but I believe, more often than not, the answers rest within

ourselves. The good news is that the stone spirits are all too eager to

assist us in understanding and moving through these difficult dances if

we will open our hearts and allow their wisdom to guide us.

Lastly, I don't believe the " rules " about what stone spirits to wear or

avoid wearing really hold much merit. At best they're truths that apply

to a specific person, surely nothing that holds true across the board.

Our own experience and, in a deeper sense, our hearts are the best

guides when it comes to understanding how our body, mind, heart and

spirit interacts with the medicine, wisdom and presence of our brothers

and sisters of the mineral kingdom. When we turn to listening and

direct experience, instead of rules and lists of do's and don'ts, we

find our truth as it exists in our relationship with the stone spirits.

Many years ago I met a large Opal that I found quite challenging. It

was, in fact, set into a ring. I felt as if my head would explode when

I slipped the ring on. At the time I assumed it had to do with the

stone itself. Maybe it needed a good cleansing, perhaps. Years later I

ralized that this experience had to do with the emotions I had held

inside, the pain I refused to feel, the hurt I wouldn't acknowledge.

When those gates finally came open I changed. Interestingly enough so

did my experience with this Opal.

I'm unsure whether any of the above is helpful to you. Your heart will

know whether there's meaning in the above or not. Trust whatever you

find in the space of your own listening.

thankyou so much. yes i have severe jaw pain. my

reiki master said most of it is from emotion and she

has helped me with it. opals are good stones for me

regardless. i will adjust and learn. any suggestions

on which hand to wear what color? i have others i

will carry. they are good for me because i can feel

pain of others so the opals reflect it to me.
