Isn't that a wonderful book!? It's a great beginner's intro to homeopathy too. And it's nice to hear you seem to be having success with your current " energy " treatments of this child, as you outlined in your post. > I would > appreciate a discussion or any tips that > might be clinically useful for this 3 year old > patient. You seem to be doing quite well with what you have done so far (congrats!) As you are reading the book Impossible Cure, I am certain you know this, but for those that do not, what Allopathic Medicine (what MD's do) defines as " Autism " (and related disorders with medical diagnosis) is usually indicative of a deep seated, chronic, disharmony in the patient. And as such, it's way beyond what any beginner should attempt to treat with homeopathy. I cannot say enough good about homeopathy, it's a wonderful, profound, miraculous healing modality. But I often hear it said that homeopathy it cannot harm someone and that's just not true, especially when one is treating a chronic complaint. Homeopathy is a tool and in competent hands it can work miracles, but just like any other tool, it can help or harm depending on the the skill of the wielder. I will get down off my homeopathy soapbox now ;-) As to what more you might do, my training is in Traditional (TCM, acupuncture and herbs) and Classical Homeopathy, both of which have their own unique diagnostic protocols that take years to learn, and both of which would view an Allopathic Medical diagnosis of " Autism " as being a very deep-seated chronic situation requiring careful management and much expertise. So not much help to you there. I bet there's something that could be helpful and supportive in the paradigm of flower essences, unfortunately that's not one of my modalities so somebody else will have to weigh in on that. If you have some time to spend on this, I would look closely at the diet of the patient and then do research to see if there are any aspects of diet that might be helpful. Seems to me I have heard that a diet relatively free of known allergens has been helpful. And that would fit one TCM category of an Autism-like presentation. Seems to me I have heard that some forms of body work have been helpful, but I have also heard that one of the problems of Autism is sensory overload, so I would research carefully on that before attempting any sort of " treatment " other than your energy work. I am sorry that I don't remember right now who it is, but there's a woman on this list that seems to be quite well educated and experienced in the standard Allopathic treatment of Autism, perhaps she can weigh in with some good ideas of supportive treatments. And just as an aside, we all who are not MD's must remember that we do not diagnose or treat disease (as defined by the various medical boards) we treat or assist individuals. Hope something in here is helpful in your situation. Christina, L.Ac. > Thanks, Anna

It has been found that some weight on an autistic child helps them stay calm and focused. The lavender also helps them stay calm too. We are starting to incorporate some rosemary into the bags too. Oh yes, this is a nice side part of our business because with her contacts in the local school system we are able to sell these to the school district as well as individual parents. The prognosis so far with all the ppl using them say they like the ones we make more than the ones with actual weights in them because the flax seed, lavender flowers and rosemary do not bruise the child as the weights do. My partner is the person who does all the sewing and she just buys regular children and teen size vest patterns and makes the vests. To put in the flax seed, she makes two and sews them together and then separates it into pockets along the hem, mid way and on top of the shoulders. I make muslin bags filled with the mixture according to her dimensions and since the areas for them are velcro'd shut she just adds the right bags when she sells the product. So there is another idea for you. Not homeopathy or essential oils but so far seems to be working. I am not a scientist, hehe, but we have 3 classrooms so far and some students are using the bags and some are not. The teachers are seeing improvement in those that are using them. Usually they are the worse case scenarios though. I will tell my partner about that book so she can get it and read it. She is very knowledgeable about the subject. Her boys are 13 and 11. It was a 1 in 10, 000 chance that her third child would have it too but they were lucky and their daughter does not have it. Please keep us posted as to what you discover as you work with this child. I for one am very interested in this topic. Cheryl ===== Cheryl Smith A Heavenly Body Anchorage AK 99508 (907) 222-0886 http://www.aheavenlybody.com New and Improved Mail - Send 10MB messages! Guest guest
Hi Anna, I took a Nutrition class a few years ago and my teacher stated that autism can be " caused/triggered " by allergies to gluten, and that if you catch this allergy early enough, you can greatly reduce the symptoms of autism. She said that she treats a patient who is now (well, then) 8-years-old and has autistic tendencies. The allergy was caught early enough so that the girl is not outwardly autistic. She stays completely off wheat, but occasionally will have cake at a party and will soon after start to exhibit autistic symptoms, but then they pass after a few hours. So the cake has to be really good to make it worth the reaction. I never met the girl so I can't tell you if this story is accurate, but I can tell you that my teacher felt very strongly about people's allergic reactions to gluten. She also spoke a lot about celiac disease. If you should explore this possibility and find it helpful (or not), I'd be really interested to know. Guest guest
I, too, have been reading many many articles on how autism can be caused by an allergy to gluten or other common things like corn. There is a great book called the No Grain Diet by Dr. Joseph Mercola that tells how to get rid of all grains in your diet, and then, after your system is cleared for a certain length of time, some people can start slowly adding back certain grains. You will know instantly if these grains effect you, and then you can stay away from them, but possibly add others back. Like, my friend suffered from migraines so much that she would actually go blind in one eye and then she even started loosing memory of time!! Nothing the doctors gave her helped. One doctor finally suggested a food allergy, so she went to an allergist and found that she was allergic to gluten, corn, and something else. Dairy if I remember right. She cut these out of her life and the migraines stopped. Finally, after being free of these things (she has to be SO careful, as corn syrup is hidden in so many foods) for almost 2 years, her husband and daughter ordered a pizza to their home. She watched them eat it, and was just longing for a bite. She figured she had been " clean " for over a year so how could just one slice hurt. She ate it and she said it tasted sooooo good. Then, within a half hour, she was in the bathroom throwing up for over 2 hours! She hasn't touched grain or corn again, and that was over 5 years ago. So, some people's system, once cleared, can go back to the occasional little bit of grain, and others cannot. I hope you find something that helps. samala------------the " other " Renee " tossed down to live among angels, who have forgotten what they are, I strive to remember " RLV 1998 ---- I took a Nutrition class a few years ago and my teacher stated that autism can be " caused/triggered " by allergies to gluten, and that if you catch this allergy early enough, you can greatly reduce the symptoms of autism. Guest guest
Thank you Al for talking to me. Also, appreciate the feedback from other members. It's so nice to see lot of caring folks on this newsgroup. Here's some background: - My son is 5 yrs old. Had a regression at 2.2 with a flu shot. Lost his language and began lot of self stimulatory behaviors. Also, suffered from severe constipation (no stool for 5-6 days, picky eater - very limited diet, increased asthma, etc. ) - First, we tried the Gluten & Casein Free diet. It didn't help. Now we are on organic food, no restriction otherwise. - We have been doing ABA for 1.5 yrs and has definitely helped in terms of following directions, etc. - We dabbled with Biomedical intervention (DAN) and didn't persist with it as the medications seemed extreme and worried what other damage they might do. - We started Homeopathy about 6 months ago - No constipation anymore, not picky eater anymore, definitely more connected and detoxing. - His asthma is a BIG problem. He doesn't know how to blow his nose and that leads to stuffiness and eventually cough and wheezing. - Our pediatrician is a wholistic doctor and has been giving us Chinese medicines for cold, etc and we are having some success in slowing down stuffiness. - I am the dad and am really interested in exploring TCM. As Al mentioned, making him healthy would be a great start. I will definitely see Al soon and in the meantime if people have ideas/suggestions, I am all open. BTW, We are also looking at Sequential Homeopathy....Appreciate any feedback Thanks, Satya
Guest guest
Well, if there is a serious dampness in the gut, the first thing I would go for is a top-of-the-line probiotic supplement such as Dr. Ohhira's Professional (not the original); or LB17 (Osumex). I am not selling any of these products or in any way connected with these companies. A relative of mine has tried the latter product who has " mental " issues and the result was a normalization of these challenges. >
Guest guest
Howdy. Another thought I had about autism: If the child was vaccinated a few years ago, mercury preservative would probably have been in the vaccine. I hope I don't have to tell anybody here what a deadly poison that is. Okay, you may ask why every child who is vaccinated doesn't develop strange mental/neurological conditions such as autism, just for starters. I would suggest that the children who don't immediately go downhill after injections simply are better constituted to start with, a matter that A. Stone kind of touched on, indirectly. Some say (I don't know their qualifications) that harmful yeasts harboured (in excess) in the intestines have a sort of symbiotic relationship with mercury. That is to say, the body attempts to protect itself from the poisonous mercury by surrounding it with the yeast; and mercury is known to be an anti-fungal. A kind of stable situation, in a negative sense. So, when people with severe intestinal dysbiosis take medicine or probiotics to clear up the yeasts, the body is, temporarily, more exposed to the mercury, which in turn would exacerbate its toxic effects on the brain. Just passing it along. I do think in any case that these ideas need to be examined and not dismissed out of hand. P.S. Since mercury & selenium are, I am told, antagonists, perhaps a child having low levels of that mineral may be more at risk of suffering mercury poisoning. Hope that this might be helpful. >

Guest guest
Autism, Diet and Supplements By Donia Alawi, health teacher and nutritionist I read a book when I was 18 years old titled " Son Rise " . It was about a family's struggle to heal their 6 year old son from autism. It was later made into a movie for television. I was so moved by the story that this disorder has been of a special interest to me and has a soft place in my heart. Recently, I got a wonderful message about how our products have helped a young boy. This following message just made my day: " I am very proud to say my son Adam Jones is recipient of the Temple Grandin Award. This is a NATIONAL award recognizing his achievements in the category of Autism. He is 4 years old, and was formally diagnosed with Autism at the Age of 2. Guess what guys???? He has been eating organic wild blue-green algae for the past year and he LOVES it!!!...Joni Jones " . I've had requests in the past from many parents to share the information I have learned about autism and alternative methods. Following is a summary of that information. Some of the contributing causes of autism: Sidney Baker, M.D., is well known in the field of clinical studies for children with autism and related disorders. According to his research, autistic children tend to exhibit central nervous system abnormalities and immune system weaknesses because of metabolic disturbances. For example, through urine tests they show low levels of certain amino acids (tryptophan) and a disturbance of the methionine metabolism. Another contributing factor to autism can be digestive malfunction and bowel flora imbalance (p. 139). In general, clinical studies have found autistic children to have difficulty removing toxins from their bodies, making it more likely than for normal children, that toxic metals can accumulate in their bodies. A hair mineral analysis can be useful for identifying toxic metal overload. Twenty-four hour urinary mineral profiles and whole blood mineral profiles, if they can be obtained, in combination with hair mineral analysis provide one of the most thorough pictures of nutritional status (Baker, p. 139). Food-related disorders, such as poor digestion and assimilation and food allergies or intolerances, can also be contributing factors in autism. Food allergies, although certainly not a cause of autism, can cause certain symptoms such as pathological growth of yeast, fungi, and/or bacteria in the bowel contributing to behavior problems (Baker, p.139). Dr. Baker also believes from his clinical studies that deficiency of Vitamin B6 and magnesium may be contributors to autism. Vitamin B6 and magnesium are needed by every cell in the body to stay alive (p. 139). Diet and autism: A healthy diet is essential for autistic children. First and foremost, foods containing sugar, phosphates and other additives should be avoided totally. These substances have been shown to interfere with proper brain function. Foods such as wheat, corn, milk, eggs and chocolate must be avoided because of the possibility of food intolerances and allergies as contributors of autism. Dr. Rimland documented hundreds of children whose behavior greatly improved when cow's milk, wheat, eggs or other common foods are removed from the diet (p. 118). A healthy diet is based on whole foods organically grown. Fruits, vegetables, fresh juices, fresh soups, brown or basmati rice plus yams and oily fish are good sources of nutrition that can add to children's bodies whatever they're missing in complex carbs, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Supplements and Autism: Whole food supplements are essential to strengthen the immune system and give the autistic child's body needed concentrated nutrients. Following is a list of recommended whole food supplements. To help with digestion and assimilation: • Acidophilus (http://tinyurl.com/24ajq ) and bifidus (http://tinyurl.com/26rur ) – should be micro-blended with a whole food like organic wild blue-green algae to help feed the good bacteria (probiotics). • Plant based enzymes – (http://tinyurl.com/mkwo ) should be micro-blended with a whole food like blue green algae – because the algae supplies minerals – enzymes don't work without minerals. (Use them with cooked foods to properly digest meals and in between meals to assist clearing /cleaning of the lymphatic system). To help with nourishing the body: • Organic Wild-crafted blue green algae (http://tinyurl.com/g1iz and http://tinyurl.com/iw4k ) - (high in the Vitamin B-complex plus necessary essential amino acids and fatty acids). To help reduce oxidative stress: • Organically grown wheat grass powder (http://tinyurl.com/6j9t5 ). • Coenzyme Q10 (http://tinyurl.com/f1f7 ) micro-blended with organic flax oil (better emulsified with the flax oil). • Oraganic Wheat sprouts (http://tinyurl.com/6vxtu ) micro-blended with organic wild blue green algae and red algae - a great antioxidant supplement that supplies the antioxidant vitamins from FOOD - not from isolated/synthetic substances. According to Dr. Rimland, autism is a biological disorder, not an emotional disorder (Gazella, p. 29). Many medical doctors such as Dr. Rimland and Dr. Baker, believe that a nutritional approach may help this biological disorder and allow autistic children to communicate and cope more normally. Guest guest
A year ago, I attended the annual conference of the Weston A. Price Foundation in Washington D.C. They had a speaker there by the name of Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride. She is a Russian Dr. who practices in the U.K. She has a book called Gut and Psychology Syndrome. It is about using a special diet similar to SCD and probiotics to cure the autism spectrum disorder. Her own son was diagnosed with autism and was at the time, on a school field trip out of the country. She said he didn't even have to follow the diet all of the time anymore! I would recommend looking into it. Best of luck! Kathy R.N.

Guest guest
Dear Ikku Iqbal, A Loving Atma Namaste! The protocol for healing Autism is given in message 1002 and updated in message 2950 in the PHQandA message archive. A copy of said message is enclosed for your easy reference. MEDICAL INFORMATION: AUTISM " Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. The result of a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain, autism and its associated behaviors have been estimated to occur in as many as 1 in 500 individuals (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 1997). Autism is four times more prevalent in boys than girls and knows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries. Family income, lifestyle, and educational levels do not affect the chance of autism's occurrence. Autism impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Children and adults with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. The disorder makes it hard for them to communicate with others and relate to the outside world. In some cases, aggressive and/or self-injurious behavior may be present. Persons with autism may exhibit repeated body movements (hand flapping, rocking), unusual responses to people or attachments to objects and resistance to changes in routines. Individuals may also experience sensitivities in the five senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. Its prevalence rate makes autism one of the most common developmental disabilities. Yet most of the public, including many professionals in the medical, educational, and vocational fields, are still unaware of how autism affects people and how they can effectively work with individuals with autism. Autism is a spectrum disorder. In other words, the symptoms and characteristics of autism can present themselves in a wide variety of combinations, from mild to severe. Although autism is defined by a certain set of behaviors, children and adults can exhibit any combination of the behaviors in any degree of severity. Two children, both with the same diagnosis, can act very differently from one another and have varying skills. Therefore, there is no standard " type " or " typical " person with autism. Parents may hear different terms used to describe children within this spectrum, such as: autistic-like, autistic tendencies, autism spectrum, high-functioning or low-functioning autism, more-able or less-able. More important to understand is, whatever the diagnosis, children can learn and function productively and show gains from appropriate education and treatment. The Autism Society of America provides information to serve the needs of all individuals within the spectrum. What Causes Autism? Researchers from all over the world are devoting considerable time and energy into finding the answer to this critical question. Medical researchers are exploring different explanations for the various forms of autism. Although a single specific cause of autism is not known, current research links autism to biological or neurological differences in the brain. In many families there appears to be a pattern of autism or related disabilities— which suggests there is a genetic basis to the disorder—although at this time no gene has been directly linked to autism. The genetic basis is believed by researchers to be highly complex, probably involving several genes in combination. Several outdated theories about the cause of autism have been proven to be false. Autism is not a mental illness. Children with autism are not unruly kids who choose not to behave. Autism is not caused by bad parenting. Furthermore, no known psychological factors in the development of the child have been shown to cause autism. A brief observation in a single setting cannot present a true picture of an individual's abilities and behaviors. Parental (and other caregivers') input and developmental history are very important components of making an accurate diagnosis. At first glance, some persons with autism may appear to have mental retardation, a behavior disorder, problems with hearing, or even odd and eccentric behavior. To complicate matters further, these conditions can co-occur with autism. However, it is important to distinguish autism from other conditions, since an accurate diagnosis and early identification can provide the basis for building an appropriate and effective educational and treatment program. Sometimes professionals who are not knowledgeable about the needs and opportunities for early intervention in autism do not offer an autism diagnosis even if it is appropriate. This hesitation may be due to a misguided wish to spare the family. Unfortunately, this too can lead to failure to obtain appropriate services for the child. What are People with Autism Like? Children within the pervasive developmental disorder spectrum often appear relatively normal in their development until the age of 24-30 months, when parents may notice delays in language, play or social interaction. Any of the following delays, by themselves, would not result in a diagnosis of a pervasive developmental disorder. Autism is a combination of several developmental challenges. The following areas are among those that may be affected by autism: 1. Communication - language develops slowly or not at all; uses words without attaching the usual meaning to them; communicates with gestures instead of words; short attention span. 2. Social Interaction - spends time alone rather than with others; shows little interest in making friends; less responsive to social cues such as eye contact or smiles. 3. Sensory Impairment - may have sensitivities in the areas of sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste to a greater or lesser degree. 4. Play - lack of spontaneous or imaginative play; does not imitate others' actions; does not initiate pretend games. 5. Behaviors - may be overactive or very passive; throws tantrums for no apparent reason; perseverates (shows an obsessive interest in a single item, idea, activity or person); apparent lack of common sense; may show aggression to others or self; often has difficulty with changes in routine. Every person with autism is an individual, and like all individuals, has a unique personality and combination of characteristics. There are great differences among people with autism. Some individuals mildly affected may exhibit only slight delays in language and greater challenges with social interactions. The person may have difficulty initiating and/or maintaining a conversation, or keeping a conversation going. Communication is often described as talking at others (for example, monologue on a favorite subject that continues despite attempts of others to interject comments). People with autism process and respond to information in unique ways. Educators and other service providers must consider the unique pattern of learning strengths and difficulties in the individual with autism when assessing learning and behavior to ensure effective intervention. Individuals with autism can learn when information about their unique styles of receiving and expressing information is addressed and implemented in their programs. The abilities of an individual with autism may fluctuate from day to day due to difficulties in concentration, processing, or anxiety. The child may show evidence of learning one day, but not the next. Changes in external stimuli and anxiety can affect learning. They may have average or above average verbal, memory or spatial skills but find it difficult to be imaginative or join in activities with others. Individuals with more severe challenges may require intensive support to manage the basic tasks and needs of living day to day. Contrary to popular understanding, many children and adults with autism may make eye contact, show affection, smile and laugh, and demonstrate a variety of other emotions, although in varying degrees. Like other children, they respond to their environment in both positive and negative ways. Autism may affect their range of responses and make it more difficult to control how their bodies and minds react. Sometimes visual, motor, and/or processing problems make it difficult to maintain eye contact with others. Some individuals with autism use peripheral vision rather than looking directly at others. Sometimes the touch or closeness of others may be painful to a person with autism, resulting in withdrawal even from family members. Anxiety, fear and confusion may result from being unable to " make sense " of the world in a routine way. With appropriate treatment, some behaviors associated with autism may change or diminish over time. The communication and social deficits continue in some form throughout life, but difficulties in other areas may fade or change with age, education, or level of stress. Often, the person begins to use skills in natural situations and to participate in a broader range of interests and activities. Many individuals with autism enjoy their lives and contribute to their community in a meaningful way. People with autism can learn to compensate for and cope with their disability, often quite well. While no one can predict the future, it is known that some adults with autism live and work independently in the community (drive a car, earn a college degree, get married); some may be fairly independent in the community and only need some support for daily pressures; while others depend on much support from family and professionals. Adults with autism can benefit from vocational training to provide them with the skills needed for obtaining jobs, in addition to social and recreational programs. Adults with autism may live in a variety of residential settings, ranging from an independent home or apartment to group homes, supervised apartment settings, living with other family members or more structured residential care. An increasing number of support groups for adults with autism are emerging around the country. Many self-advocates are forming networks to share information, support each other, and speak for themselves in the public arena. More frequently, people with autism are attending and/or speaking at conferences and workshops on autism. Individuals with autism are providing valuable insight into the challenges of this disability by publishing articles and books and appearing in television specials about themselves and their disabilities. Is There a Cure? Understanding of autism has grown tremendously since it was first described by Dr. Leo Kanner in 1943. In the medical sense, there is no cure for the differences in the brain which result in autism. However, better understanding of the disorder has led to the development of better coping mechanisms and strategies for the various manifestations of the disability. Some of these symptoms may lessen as the child ages; others may disappear altogether. With appropriate intervention, many of the associated behaviors can be positively changed, even to the point in some cases, that the child or adult may appear to the untrained person to no longer have autism. The majority of children and adults will, however, continue to exhibit some manifestations of autism to some degree throughout their entire lives.
